The Director of Engineering is a key leadership position within Facilities Operations and Management (FO&M) having primary responsibility for the Engineering Office's services, including Engineering Services, Energy Management, and the Integrated Automation Program. The Engineering Office develops, supports and/or plans projects and programs for Dartmouth's decarbonizations efforts, new facilities, energy conservation opportunities, building systems and infrastructure upgrades while assisting operations in troubleshooting and repair activities. The engineering office sets the strategy for how Building and Plant automation control systems are designed, used and integrated into the Campus Energy Management System to provide the necessary functions and data to operate the campus and to monitor greenhouse gases and energy use.
This individual works closely with and supports the other Directors in Campus Services such as the Director of Planning and Senior Director of Project Management Services, and other facility managers in the Office of Residential Life (ORL), Real Estate Office (REO), Arts and Sciences (A+S), professional schools, and other College organizations.
Dartmouth's facilities include 5.43 million GSF across 177 buildings. These facilities serve over 6,200 students and 4,000 faculty and staff in a variety of academic, research, administrative, athletic, and residential spaces.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:
Bachelor's degree

BA /BS in mechanical/ electrical engineering preferred or the equivalent.
NH PE required within one year of hire
10-plus years of experience in planning and design of building and district utility engineered systems, construction, commissioning, energy management, and facility maintenance/operations, or the equivalent.
Solid background in business management including forecasting, estimating and budgetary controls.
Demonstrated organizational and managerial experiences including the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
Excellent supervisory and interpersonal communications skills.
Ability to relate well to diverse group of constituents and to build strong relationships within and among those groups.
Flexible and diplomatic management style that empowers staff, sets high expectations, and holds department colleagues accountable.
Strong service orientation and a demonstrated desire to continually improve the services and operations of an organization.
Highly developed staffing and budget resource management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a college or university environment is strongly preferred.
Expertise in the design and operation of high performance buildings and district utility systems utilizing low carbon technologies such as geo-exchange, heat pumps, thermal and electric storage, and solar thermal and electricity generation.
Expertise with design and operation of integrated automation systems for buildings and utility plants.

Provides leadership and oversight to the Engineering staff.
Acts as the primary contact for projects led by the Planning and Project Management Services departments for engineering support. In concert with Engineering Design Manager, determines engineering support required for a particular project. Reviews workload to determine project and support activities performed internally by engineering staff vs. outside consultants.
Acts as the primary contact for Engineering's service operational support services of the utilities and building operations departments.

Provides leadership to the strategic process that evaluates fuel/energy sources for the College to operate in a sustainable environment and executes commodity purchases for electricity and fuels in accordance with Dartmouth's approved strategy.
Develops and updates campus standards such as the Design and Construction Guidelines and the Campus' High Performance Building Policy in collaboration with other campus stakeholders.
Oversees and supports the Energy Program Manager to provide planning and implementation of energy efficiency studies and projects to improve campus energy efficiency.
Oversees and supports the Integrated Automation Program Manager to provide short- and long-range planning and development of building automated control systems and their integration with the Campus Energy Management System, working closely with CSTS and FO&M operations.
Supports the College's emergency planning efforts and is expected to respond for emergencies during off hours, weekends and holidays as needed.

Fiscal Management
Works with FOM Financial Officer to ensure appropriate fiscal, procurement, and resource administration within area of responsibility, while following the College's signature authority Policy.
Accountable for developing and administering financial components of the Engineering operating budget, as well as assigned capital projects and energy conservation related budgets.
Monitors and approves the activities of contractors/consultant personnel and services in assigned area of responsibility as required to assure that satisfactory and acceptable performance standards are achieved and authorizes payments for contracted services in accordance with departmental procedures.
