Purpose of Position
The Department of Theatre Arts in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota seeks a full-time, non-tenure track teaching assistant professor who specializes in technical direction. The duties of the position will involve teaching theatre arts courses, managing the scene shop and builds for the department's four to five productions each season with possible design opportunities. This is a 9-month, non-tenure track position, contingent upon the availability of funding.
Duties & Responsibilities
Oversee the planning, construction, installation, and strike of scenery for all departmental productions.
Supervise the Theatre scene shop, which includes working with and training student assistants and those completing practicum and similar technical theatre experiences.
Manage scene shop and production budgets.
Maintain prop and equipment inventories.
Participate in departmental governance, including oversight of the curriculum and selection of production season offerings.
Recruit, advise and mentor students, including stage managers.
Draft shop drawings, manage sound design and video elements of theatre productions, and occasionally design sets.
As part of faculty service activities, serve as a technical resource for the Theatre Arts Department.
Required Competencies
Expertise in building and designing theatrical scenic elements.
Expertise in all scene shop and lighting equipment.
Expertise in sound design equipment, live mixing, and sound systems.
Expertise in projection/video equipment.
Expertise in computer software such as Vectorworks, AutoCad, and other rendering media
Demonstrated knowledge of the safe use of equipment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills along with the ability to inspire and mentor students.
Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department of Theatre Arts.
Minimum Requirements
MFA in Theatre Design and/or Technical Theatre by August 15, 2025
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the areas of drafting/digital rendering, welding, woodworking, rigging, and other traditional methods of fabrication and construction.
Experience using contemporary technology, equipment, and practices applicable to the discipline, such as sound, lighting, and video equipment.
Demonstrated capability to create, organize, budget, and effectively execute technical production schedules involving many elements and people.
Three or more years as a technical director in a professional or academic setting, including managing shop schedules, budgets, and supervising shop crews.
Teaching or instructional experience related to theatre, stagecraft, and stage management.
