HART United, Inc is a private, nonprofit organization, providing residential and clinical services to more than 150 individuals with developmental disabilities and autism throughout Connecticut. Residential options include licensed group homes, and less restrictive settings such as apartments, community care homes, respite services, and in-home family supports. HART is committed to affecting legislative changes that will empower clients and their families to have inclusion and more choices in the community.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of HART United, Inc. and, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of HART United, Inc. Together, the Board and Executive Director assure the organization's accomplishments, mission, vision, and the responsibility of the organization to its diverse constituents.
The Board delegates responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the Executive Director, and s/he has the authority to carry out these responsibilities, in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board. The Executive Director provides direction and information to the Board as it carries out its governance functions.
Responsibilities:
Mission, policy and planning
Helps the Board determine HART's values, mission, vision, and short and long-term goals.
Helps the Board monitor and evaluate HART's inclusion in the community, its effectiveness and its results.
Keeps the Board fully informed on the stability of HART and on all the important factors influencing it.
o Indentifies problems and opportunities and addresses them; brings those which are appropriate to the Board and its committees; and facilitates discussion and deliberation.
o Informs the Board and its committees about trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy making. Recommends policy positions.
Keeps informed of developments in human services, not-for-profit management and governance, philanthropy and fund development.
Legal / Regulatory Compliance
Assures the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitors compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Management and Administration
Provides general oversight of all HART activities, manages the day-to-day operations, and assures a smoothly functioning, efficient organization.
Assures program quality and organizational stability through development and implementation of standards and controls, systems and procedures, and regular evaluation.
Assures a work environment that recruits, retains, and supports quality staff and volunteers.
Assures process for selecting, developing, motivating, and evaluating staff and volunteers.
Governance
Helps the Board evaluate its own role and accountabilities and that of its committees and individual members, and helps evaluate performance regularly.
Works with the Board President/Chair to enable the Board to fulfill its governance functions and facilitates the performance by the Board, its committees and individual Board members.
With the Board President/Chair, focuses Board attention on long-range strategic issues.
Manages the Board's due diligence process to assure timely attention to core issues.
Recommends new Board members
Finance
Promotes programs and services that are cost efficient, employing economy while maintaining quality of services.
Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting and audit.
Develops, implements and monitors agency budgets.
Works with Board to ensure financing to support short and long-term goals.
o Helps guide and enable the Board, its fund development committee(s) and its individual Board members to participate actively in the fund development process.
o Helps the Board and its development committee design, implement and monitor a viable fundraising plan, policies and procedures.
o Participates actively in identifying, cultivating and soliciting donor prospects.
o Understands and has experience with state and federal governmental funding agencies
Community Relations
Facilitates the integration of HART into the community by using effective marketing and communications activities.
Acts as an advocate, within the public and private sectors, for issues relevant to HART, its services and constituencies.
Listens to clients, volunteers, donors and the community in order to improve services and generate community involvement.
Assures community awareness of HART's response to community needs.
Serves as chief spokesperson for HART, assuring proper representation of HART to the community.
Works with legislators, regulatory agencies, volunteers and representatives of the not-for-profit sector to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy community and address the issues of HART constituencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will possess the majority of the following qualifications:
At least 10 years of increasingly responsible experience as a leader in a comparable not-for-profit organization.
Preferably, prior experience as the overall leader of an organization as Executive Director, CEO, with direct accountability to the organization's board of trustees or directors.
Deep knowledge of and demonstrated accomplishments in non-profit management and administration, integrating and coordinating such diverse areas of management as governance, human resources, finance, planning and evaluation, community relations and fundraising.
A high level of personal skills is required to make formal, persuasive presentations to groups and to deal effectively with people from all segments of the community.
Comfortable with diversity and a wide range of backgrounds, beliefs and experiences.
Bachelor's degree. Graduate degree in a relevant field preferred.
