PURPOSE SUMMARY.  Assist in the operation and maintenance of the County’s wastewater treatment facilities, lift stations, wastewater laboratory and sludge disposals facilities.     

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES.   

1. Follow daily plant operating and maintenance functions. 

2. Record instrument readings and laboratory data for monthly reports and as required from EPA and State of New Mexico Environmental Department. 

3. Assist with operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.

  •  Clean facilities and inspect and repair equipment.

  •  Collect samples and record equipment operations.

  • Perform plant process control and adjust aeration and wasting rates to keep treatment facility operating efficiently and in compliance.

  • Take dissolve oxygen readings in aeration tanks and effluent to ensure compliance.

  • Assist in performing lab testing to include pH, MLSS, BOD, TSS, and E. coli.

  • Operate associated thickening equipment (waste pumps, Belt Filter Press, Sludge beds) to maintain proper biological treatment capabilities.

  • Operate assorted pumps and valves used to control flows and treatment processes based upon established parameters.

  • Detect malfunctions and notifies supervision promptly to ensure wastewater treatment systems and equipment are operating within prescribed limits.

4. Follow established preventive maintenance program to enhance the longevity of equipment and facilities.

5. Collect daily flow meter readings for monthly reports.

6. Check the hours at lift pump stations and ensure pumps are working properly.  

7. Assist with inspections of new sewer services installed by contractors when needed.

8. Assist other operators in the maintenance of the collection system to include routine cleaning of wastewater mains, emergency backups.

9. Assist in locating sewer services in the collection system with the use of camera equipment. 

10. Assist with NM811 line locating of our wastewater utility lines and services using As-build plans.

11. Respond to customer odor complaints, finds the source of the problem and reports to supervisor.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES.  Other duties may be assigned.  Position requires availability for responding to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS. 

A. Education.  High School diploma or GED.

B. Experience.  Five (5) years full-time experience in wastewater facility operations providing extensive knowledge of biological processes, equipment, tools, physical operations, and methods used in inspecting, cleaning, operating, and maintaining wastewater facilities.

C. Education/Experience substitution.  In accordance with County policy. 

D. Licenses/Certifications.  Valid driver’s license and must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy.  Current NM Wastewater Level IV certification. 

E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.).  Must pass a background and driving record check. 
    

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Must have knowledge of:  Current wastewater systems and operating procedures; pertinent laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the trade; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; mathematical calculations associated with operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities; pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations; various materials, methods and techniques of the trade; and business English, spelling grammar, and punctuation, and basic arithmetic. 

Must have the ability to: Effectively operate and obtain and interpret results from a variety of industry related tools, equipment, meters, and devices; express ideas clearly when providing oral and written reports and recommendations; use initiative and judgment in working independently while recognizing matters which require the awareness of the Utilities Manager; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

Must have skills in: Analyze and evaluate information accurately; review diagrams, instructions, construction plans and reports; maintain complete and accurate records; and interpret technical instructions and analyze complex variables.

 

Compensation Range

$20.80 - $33.46
