We are seeking a full-time Senior Machinist / Tool Maker in our Salem, OR location. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up and operating advanced machine tools and fitting and assembling complex parts to make or repair complex metal parts, mechanisms, tools or machines.
Essential Functions
Study work request, solid model and drawing to determine the materials, operations and tools needed to produce complex prototype and tooling machined parts for our aviation, fitness, outdoor and marine products
Program, set up and operate advanced CNC mills and/or CNC live tooling lathes to machine complex parts to specification including 3-D contouring and multi-axis work
Verify conformance of workpiece to specifications using measuring instruments
Position and secure workpiece in holding device, such as a chuck, vise or fixture to perform advanced machining and/or inspection operations
Create advanced work holding fixtures or jaws to accurately hold the part during machining
Use hand tools, such as files, scrapers and wrenches, to fit and assemble complex parts to assemblies or mechanisms
Verify dimensions and alignment with measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gages and gage blocks
Operate machine to complete finished complex parts or tools and inspect for conformance
Perform operator level preventive maintenance on machine
Program Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining work centers using CAM software
Leverage knowledge of safe shop practices and evaluate equipment and processes to ensure associate safety
May perform as a leader on small projects and seeks opportunities to optimize projects and processes
Use analytical and quantitative methods to understand, predict and enhance machined part processes
Lift up to 55 pounds to effectively perform the essential functions of this job description
Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
Identify and help drive technical root cause and corrective action for given problems
Independently complete 2D and 3D manual and/or CNC parts
Leverage knowledge and use of advanced techniques to maintain standards for close part tolerances
Serve as a mentor to less experienced Machinist/Tool Makers including sharing knowledge on shop tools/processes/procedures
Demonstrate a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
Apply detailed knowledge of Garmin processes/procedures, add value on new products to support strategies, and independently determine general approach/specific solutions to technical problems
Basic Qualifications
Associate's Degree in Machining Technology or related degree program AND a minimum of 3 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of 5 years education and experience
Demonstrated ability to successfully complete complex projects and/or parts independently
Demonstrated ability to educate others on efficient and accurate machining techniques, processes and procedures
Demonstrated experience with set-up and operation of a CNC Lathe and a CNC Mill
Must possess the ability to lift up to 55 lbs to effectively perform the essential functions of this job description
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and be flexible in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
