JOB SUMMARY

The ED Director is responsible for all patient care in Emergency Services, to include Urgent Care. The Director will interpret and support hospital medical staff philosophy, objectives and policies. The Director will assist the Associate Chief Nursing Officer and/or Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Clinical Officer in the following with emphasis on Performance Improvement in each of these functions to include working with other Nurse Directors, members of management, medical staff and other clinical areas: preparation of budget and management of those funds appropriately, development of long range plans in accordance with hospital goals, preparation of policies and guidelines for their departments, maintain a high quality service area and maintain a multidisciplinary Performance Improvement team within their departments. The Nurse Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining compliance with standards of nursing practice. The Director also provides direct nursing care to patients, families, groups and communities by instituting standards of best practices of nursing care for pediatric through geriatric patients on the department Units.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. Manages and directs ED staff and performs the following: monitors performance standards, provides competency testing, provides in-services and education, holds and documents meetings following standardized meeting format, conducts new hire orientation, assesses performance annually, review and compute hours on timecards for payroll use and maintain ongoing list of departmental goals.
  2. Drafts and revises policies and procedures relating to the ED and services provided.
  3. Prepares and monitors the budget for the operation of the ED.
  4. Promotes and contributes to a positive, problem-solving environment.
  5. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and guidelines, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  6. Provides direction and leadership to staff, students and new graduates.
  7. Maintains a professional attitude and observes proper ethics.
  8. Possesses good crisis intervention skills.
  9. Communication:
  1. Acts as liaison between the patient, family and physician with respect for confidentiality and dignity.
  2. Communicates clearly and appropriately with others in the hospital environment, coordinating the needs of nursing with those supporting departments and assists in solving problems related to the welfare of patients and staff.
  1. Provides direct patient care.
  1. Interviews patient and/or family to obtain required history and accurate assessment.
  2. Makes accurate patient assessments and assigns a triage priority.
  3. Initiates diagnostic and therapeutic measures as indicated by standing protocols.
  4. Demonstrates proficiency in computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation. Charts concisely, descriptively and legibly and includes patient’s progress or lack of progress.

  1. Participates in fire, safety, disaster and infection control educational programs and exercises.
  2. Complies with certification/recertification requirements of the position and attends continuing education courses to remain current in the field.
  3. Enhances professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  1. Participates in specific patient quality assessment activities, including chart review.
  2. Is responsible to/for the department 24/7.
  3. Performs related work as required.

USP 800

  1. This position works with or near hazardous medication in healthcare settings that may cause skin rashes, infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and possibly leukemia or other cancers.
  2. This position will be provided with didactic training that reflects the policies and procedures on hazardous medications with the opportunity to ask questions. This will be done upon hire and annually thereafter.
  3. This position is expected to agree and abide by Tomah Health Hazardous Medication policies and procedures at all times.
  4. Failure to follow established policies and procedures may increase risk of exposure to hazardous substances.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, BSN required. MSN preferred.
  2. Current licensure to permit to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
  3. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS, ACLS, TNCC, ENPC and NRP.
  4. Prior Critical Care and or Emergency Care experience preferred.
  5. Minimum of 2 years clinical management experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential professional nursing practice.
  4. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
  5. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress, with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and judgment in problem solving, analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.
  6. Needs to possess a high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  7. Ability to mentor and assist staff in professional growth.
  8. Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
  9. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  10. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. The ED Director is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The ER Director is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and detect odors.
  3. The ED Director must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
