JOB TITLE:

Asst Professor - Art History

JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming Department of Visual Arts welcomes applications for a full-time, benefited, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History, beginning August 2025. We seek a dynamic scholar-educator with a non-European research focus, preferably Indigenous Art of the Americas, and a demonstrated ability to teach Art History Survey and upper-level courses in their area of specialty. A record of active scholarship, publication, and professional development is required. The successful candidate should also have an interest and competency in teaching Early Modern Art, Museum Studies, or a second non-European area. Their experience should include teaching in a Liberal Arts setting with studio, design, art education, and art history majors. Desirable qualities include demonstrated success in experiential learning, universal design, and other advanced pedagogical techniques as well as experience with multiple methods of content delivery including in-person, online, and hybrid modalities. Candidates should also be able to collaborate with department members to shape the future of the Department of Visual Arts through curriculum development and self-governance.

The Art History program at UW supports all five major degrees in the department and is also closely tied to other departments across campus and the interdisciplinary Museum Studies minor: through mentorship, study abroad programs, and internships. The program supports students in their goals to work in the public sector or pursue postgraduate education. UW offers students and faculty alike opportunities to work closely with the University of Wyoming Art Museum, the American Heritage Center's archival collection, and the Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts.

The UW Visual Arts Building, a state-of-the-art LEED Certified construction, was completed in 2012 and provides 79,000 square feet for undergraduate scholarship and studio art practice. The building features a public gallery, a large-capacity lecture hall, two student galleries, and space to accommodate a growing undergraduate program. The facility provides students and faculty with a safe and environmentally responsible space featuring natural light and views of the Snowy Range and Laramie Range Mountains. NASAD accredited, the department offers majors in Art Education (BA), Art History (BA), Studio Art (BA, BFA), and Visual Communication Design (BFA) and minors in Art History, Museum Studies, and a wide variety of studio practices. The office space for this position is located in the Visual Arts Building near the Art History seminar room and main lecture hall.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach a 2/3 course load for the academic year, which may include Art History Survey and upper division courses, as well as other areas of art history and museum studies
  • Maintain active scholarly research and professional development at regional and national levels
  • Provide service to the department, college, and university
  • Work with colleagues to develop an evolving art history curriculum
  • Work closely with work-study students and post-undergraduate assistants in support of area
  • Serve as advisor/mentor to major and minor students in the department

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in Art History
  • Two years teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of lower- and upper-level art history courses
  • Active non-European research focus research agenda with short- and long-term goals
  • Excellent communication skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated two years post-doctoral teaching experience
  • Strong and established scholarly research in Indigenous art of the Americas
  • Demonstrated application of advanced art history pedagogies and philosophies
  • Public or digital humanities research methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences in the classroom and department
  • Experience working in a collegial team environment
