Description

The College of the Florida Keys Academy (CFK Academy) believes the teacher is the most critical link between the instructional program and the students who will be served. The ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders is imperative. Those employed by CFK Academy will have completed an extensive review to ensure they meet the standards for the school both in the delivery of instruction and the establishment of the learning community atmosphere. The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher is responsible for overseeing the ESE program for students on his/her caseload and ensuring that ESE procedures and services are implemented in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Florida statutes and rules related to ESE, and the districts ESE Policies and Procedures as approved by FLDOE. CFK Academy instructional employees report to the Academy's Principal.
Examples of Duties

Exceptional Student Education teachers are expected to fulfill the tasks of a teacher in addition to their responsibilities specific to exceptional student education. Effective ESE teachers will:

1. Implement and follow all federal, state, and local guidelines for ESE programs.
2. Participate as a member of the team planning and/or conducting evaluations/reevaluations and determining eligibility for ESE services.
3. Plan and oversee the use of assessment accommodations in accordance with students' IEPs.
4. Schedule, attend, and facilitate IEP team meetings in a manner that is informative and collaborative to seek the best instructional options for the student.
5. Coordinate annual reviews of IEPs with parents/guardians and other IEP team members.
6. Provide services in accordance with students' IEPs, meeting and providing instruction in the locations and at the times designated.
7. Participate in the CFK Academy threat assessment team.
8. Maintain records of all communications regarding IEPs.
9. Maintain records of parent/guardian contacts.
10. Maintain student records as required by the school, district, state, and federal law.
11. Report information as required by the school, district, state, and federal law.
12. Provide progress information to parents/guardians at scheduled intervals and maintain records of such information.
13. Monitor student behavior and note strategies for improving student behavior.
14. Provide staff development to colleagues to ensure all students are being served in a manner commensurate with their needs.
15. Serve as the Academy's liaison to the community and other professionals regarding the needs of exceptional students.
16. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding exceptional students including identity and IEP contents.

Teachers are expected to fulfill the role of instructional leader at all times. Effective teachers:
1. Provide for the safety and welfare of any and all students of the school.
2. Provide instruction that contributes to academic growth and positive development of students.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter taught and implement the curriculum with fidelity.
4. Implement and participate in professional development related to Project-Based Learning, the learning management system, and all curriculum and instructional resources.
5. Regularly assess the progress of students through effective classroom and grade-level assessments.
6. Report student progress and performance to parents at scheduled intervals and as specific needs arise.
7. Report student progress information to the district via the student information system.
8. Plan, organize, and create a positive classroom learning environment.
9. Maintain the discipline of students.
10. Establish classroom guidelines that support the policies of the school and enhance the learning environment for the students.
11. Follow and uphold the policies of the school and assist students with appropriate behavior and actions that reflect the policies of the school.
12. Organize and participate in school activities and functions that may occur outside the regular school schedule.
13. Collaborate with instructional staff to coordinate instructional activities and resources within and across the curriculum; support colleagues in the delivery of instruction as it pertains to areas of specialty.
14. Assist with the management and supervision of students throughout the school day.
15. Attend scheduled staff and team meetings.
16. Attend meetings and professional development sessions as established by the school leadership.
17. Contribute to the learning community atmosphere of the school.
18. Maintain the confidentiality of student information as required by school policy and state and federal requirements.
19. Other related duties assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Proficient in the use of technology.
Education and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • ESE certification required.
  • Additional certifications in English 6-12 or Math 6-12 preferred.
  • ESOL certification or endorsement preferred.
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
  • Valid Florida teaching certificate for the grade/subject being taught required.
  • Exceptions may be considered as allowable for a teacher who:
    • Holds a valid Florida teaching certificate with coverage other than that required under the Florida Course Code Directory and has been properly approved to teach out-of-field (allowable for one year only); or
    • Has been properly identified as qualified non-certificated instructional personnel with expert skill or knowledge in accordance with Rule 6A-1.0502, F.A.C.

PAID TUITION - Tuition fees for credit courses taken at the College are waived for employees and their eligible dependents, including domestic partners. Tuition and student fees are waived for non-credit physical education courses.
