ELEMENTARY EDUCATION TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Elementary Education Teacher

SUPERVISES: Directly supervises learners assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervise all students.

JOB GOAL: To create a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education in accordance with each pupil's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Valid Alabama Teacher Certificate.

2. Proper Endorsement in Elementary Education..

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach reading language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports.
  • Control assigned district-owned instructional equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  • Evaluate, select and requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  • Maintain professional competency through inservice education activities.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  • Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilize appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
  • Supervise student organizations as requested.

  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provide nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meet at least minimum school district requirements of the annual number of inservice hours.
  • Assist the administration with and/or supervise entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.

  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Good knowledge of school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.


  • OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
