Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full time Associate Roadway Discipline Manager position in our Indianapolis, Indiana office. Our new team member will be expected to take a leading role in the advancement of Hanson's technical abilities in the field of transportation engineering and serve as a technical leader for a variety of transportation engineering projects.

Position Profile

This person is expected to work as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute transportation projects for a variety of clients including local governments and state departments of transportation throughout Indiana, Kentucky and beyond. Projects are likely to include reconstruction of rural highways and roads, urban highways and streets, major urban thoroughfares, urban and rural bridge replacements, culverts and storm sewer, intersections, sidewalks and multiuse paths, rail grade crossings, signing, pavement marking, and traffic control plans for construction. Position requires the ability to serve as a key member of the project design team providing direction and supervision to junior level staff in the areas of roadway design. Position requires the ability to work on a variety of road related projects, take direction from multiple project managers, and coordinate with other staff.

This position has a $10,000 signing bonus.

A Day in Life of an Associate Roadway Discipline Manager at Hanson

This person will be responsible for overseeing all roadway work and staff in Indiana and Kentucky. You will be responsible for tracking, distributing, and balancing the workload for staff locally, coordinating with and reporting to the Roadway Discipline Manager to allocate additional resources from other locations and disciplines to deliver quality projects on time and within budget. Coordinating with project managers on current and upcoming projects, assisting with project pursuits, and helping to identify areas of opportunity.

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:
  • Managing and developing roadway staff.
  • Working with project managers to develop project scope and hours for related tasks.
  • Working with local governments and state transportation agencies to deliver projects.
  • Delivering roadway design tasks on time and within budget.
  • Preparation and review of complex design calculations.
  • Preparation of construction documents for urban and rural roadway projects.
  • As a member of the Roadway Discipline provide technical support to all markets.
  • Support the development of the roadway discipline operating plan and roadway discipline goals.
  • Interact with clients to discuss existing and future projects.
  • Contribute to project pursuits.
  • Collaborate on base compensation, incentive compensation, and advancement for roadway staff.
  • Provide input on staff development and training needs along with mentoring of junior and mid-level staff across multiple office locations.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Roadway Discipline Manager to help track backlog and staff utilization.
  • Technical organization participation.
  • Assist with business operations and other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:

Technical Skills:
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality control procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with INDOT, roadway plans and standards and Municipal/Local Government transportation standards and related discipline projects.
  • Experience on projects with complex geometric components is desirable.
  • Experience with Microstation/PowerGeopak/Inroads (ORD or SS10) software is desirable.

Soft Skills:
  • Comfortable with communicating technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
  • Building effective relationships with internal and external client bases.
  • Mentoring and managing junior and mid-level technical staff.
  • Provide staff training recommendations.
  • Help to manage an internal and external professional development program.
  • Oral communication and technical writing skills.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in transportation/traffic engineering or civil engineering.
  • 10 or more years of progressive roadway engineering experience.
  • Indiana Professional Engineer license or be able to reciprocate a license from another state within 6 months.
  • Supervisory experience, especially with managing staff across multiple geographies.
