Lighting Designers are responsible for creating unique lighting solutions to complex architectural projects during all phases of multiple simultaneous projects. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature with Engineers, Architects, Interior Designers, and other members of the design team. Work includes a wide range of moderately complex duties under general guidance and minimal supervision from Senior Professionals. Independent judgment is required on work details. Assignments will include developing and presenting conceptual lighting design direction, validating the lighting design concept through computer aided visualizations and calculations, developing details to ensure the integration of lighting within the architectural environment, preparing cost estimates, and producing deliverable drawing sets for site plans, lighting plans, schedules, details, lighting control schedules and sequences of operation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Establishes, designs, and specifies project-appropriate architectural lighting design requirements.
Plans and directs the work of Lighting Designers, Electrical EITs and Designers in the creation of Electrical Lighting Contract Documents.
Independently attends client meetings and communicates with clients, consultants, contractors, and others during various stages of project development.
Leads the execution of site investigations and observations.
Prepares narratives, reports, calculations, drawing and specification documents in accordance with a high degree of quality, yet with regard to project schedule and budget constraints.
Performs cross-discipline discussions and coordination.
Assists with reviews of electrical lighting contract documents for quality and compliance with code and program requirements.
Participates in Construction Administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFI’s, solving construction issues, and performing site visits to assess general conformance with the design concept.
Mentors and encourages the development of junior professionals and designers.
Assists with marketing and business development activities including building relationship with key clients and strategic partners, proposal writing, fee estimates, and client interviews.
Travel for marketing and project-related activities will be required.
Accredited degree in Architectural Lighting Design or Architectural Engineering with an electrical/lighting emphasis.
Minimum 4 years as lead architectural lighting designer, 8 years total architectural lighting design experience on a wide variety of projects within the A/E industry.
Preferred Certifications: CLD, IALD, LC, PE or design related professional licensure.
Demonstrated practical knowledge of codes and related industry standards.
Production experience preparing deliverable drawing sets in Revit.
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency using 3D modeling software such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, 3DS Max, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Rhino, Grasshopper, DIVA, Climate Studio.
Building energy code analysis software such as COMcheck preferred.
Lighting simulation analysis software, such as Iray or AGi32. Knowledge of LightStanza or ElumTools for REVIT is a plus.
Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills.
Ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.
Positive attitude and commitment to being an active participant working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
