JOB TITLE: Laborer
REPORTS TO: Labor Foreman
Summary of position: Position performs routine physical labor; moving materials, tools, and/or equipment; cleaning equipment, vehicles, machinery, and work areas; operating various types of tools, such as, pneumatic, electric, and hand; brush roll or hand brush painting; assisting blasters by pulling hoses, mucking tanks, and removing grit. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.
Essential Job Requirements: Perform routine physical work under close supervision. Follow oral and written instruction from supervisor or more experienced worker. Seldom required to make decisions. Move materials and/or tools and equipment manually or with dolly, hand truck, cart, forklift. Muck tanks, pull hoses, and remove grit with vacuum hoses or by bucket. Clean equipment, vehicles, machinery, work area using water and other cleaning agents, vacuums, hoses, brushes, cloths, or other cleaning equipment. Operate variety of equipment including pneumatic tools, electric tools, and hand tools. May be required to perform other duties as deemed necessary for job completion. All of the above shall be performed in a safe and timely manner.
Required Education: None
Required Experience: On-the-job training
Required Skills: Must be able to cooperate and work well with other employees and shipyard personnel. Must be able to take direction from supervisors or more experienced workers.
Physical Requirements: Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces; occasionally required to sit; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; required use of vision to see up close, distance, and peripherally, as well as depth perception and ability to adjust focus in low light conditions. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks.
Mental Requirements: Must be able to carry out simple to complex instructions in a safe and efficient manner.

Working Conditions: Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, close proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing. Shift work and overtime involved most of the time. Travel often required.
