Working Title:
Lecturer or Instructor in Spanish
Full Time
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track position in Spanish, effective August 2025.
Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. Applicants are required to possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish. The successful candidate's primary responsibilities will include teaching courses within the department's Spanish program and the university's Liberal Learning Core. Research and teaching interests in Second Language Acquisition and/or contemporary Peninsular Spanish culture are particularly welcome. A secondary teaching interest in a field such as business Spanish, digital humanities, community-based learning, or other approaches involving Spanish for the professions or experiential learning is highly desirable. The department is central to the University's curriculum and mission, and it prides itself on its collegiality and cross-disciplinary research.
The nominal teaching load for non-tenure-track appointments is 4-4. The Ph.D. in Spanish or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of lecturer, a position which has the potential for promotion to a multi-year contract or to the rank of senior lecturer after a given number of years of service. Candidates with a master's degree may be considered for appointment at the rank of instructor.
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University is composed of 16 teacher-scholars who are committed to undergraduate education and to professional growth. The Department offers instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, ancient Greek, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. Our programs include five majors, four interdisciplinary minors, and MAT degrees in Spanish and ESL. We are also strong supporters of study abroad: MCLL has sponsored numerous short-term study trips and, in conjunction with the Office of Study Abroad, advises students on longer-term language immersion opportunities. In addition to serving our majors and minors, MCLL has the privilege of working with a significant portion of the student body through the second language literacy requirement in the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum. MCLL faculty members publish on a diverse range of subjects and welcome the opportunity to mentor students on independent research projects. Candidates wishing to know more about the department and its academic programs are invited to visit the department's
website.
