Seeking a dedicated Beacons School Success Lead with a passion for youth development to lead staff and serve as a mentor, role model, and educator within the YMCA Beacons network, creating a fun and inclusive environment while planning lessons and leading group activities.
Specialized skills (e.g., dance, music, art, sports) are welcome but not required. This part-time role (in a school-based setting located in Richfield High School), is ideal for those seeking careers in education, youth development and similar fields. $17/hr.
The Beacons after school youth development program transforms schools into active community youth centers after school, providing free high quality educational, recreational, and leadership development activities and opportunities. The school-based youth development program addresses community and youth needs with proven educational and social program strategies for (Elementary, Middle and High School) youth. Beacons after school youth development programming provides youth (Elementary, Middle and High School) a place to grow in their own school community through challenging activities, caring relationships, and leadership experiences with a mentor.
Beacons provides a wide range of structured high quality and engaging youth development enrichment programs in youths school community. Beacons provides opportunities for youth after school (Elementary, Middle and High School) to develop social, academic, and leadership skills. The Beacons after school youth development program, partners with schools, community members and families. The Beacons after school youth development program is focused on youth voice and choice, youth and adult partnerships, community building and hands on learning experience while providing targeted support for youth to try new and exciting things.
Beacons after school youth development lead staff are mentors, role models, allies, community builders and educators for youth (Elementary, Middle and High School). The Beacons after school Youth Development Lead staff plan lessons, lead groups and keep youth (Elementary, Middle and High School) engaged while having fun and building community.
Beacons after school youth development program encourages people to apply who have specialized skills that they can teach youth (ex. dance, music, computer skills, art, sports) but is not required. The Beacons School Success Lead staff position is a part-time role, 15-20 hours/week, located within a school community and after school hours Monday through Thursday.
The salary for this position starts at $17.00 hourly. We take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining salary; therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of other benefits and earned time off that vary depending on part-time or full-time status.
1. Job Summary:
YMCA Beacons School Success programs engage youth as leaders and learners by transforming schools into active youth centers afterschool and in the summer, providing free high quality educational, recreational, and leadership development activities opportunities to kindergarten-12th grade youth and their families at our 8 Beacons School Success Centers located in neighborhoods in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Richfield.
The Beacons School Success Lead Staff are mentors, role models, allies, and educators. Lead staff are responsible for developing, planning, and leading groups of youth after-school. This position operates at a specific Beacons School Success center. The incumbent provides quality enrichment experiences for youth that focus on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
2. Essential Functions:
Plan, develop and implement enrichment curriculum and program activities with a group of young people.
Provide work direction to program staff and volunteers while on duty.
Evaluate the program on a continuous basis and recommend needed changes to the Beacons School Success Sr. Coordinator and/or Program Director.
Ensure that the center and classroom spaces are kept clean and organized.
Perform administrative activities to support the program, including collecting daily attendance.
Assist in the promotion of the program including recruiting young people to program, communication to families and school staff.
3. Relationships:
This position reports directly to the Program Director. The incumbent interacts with participants, parents, staff, school employees and the community.
4. Qualifications:
Required:
Minimum age of 18.
Experience and/or education in youth studies, child development, human relations, communication, or recreational programs.
Certifications required within 30 days of hire: Adult and child CPR or CPR/PR; First Aid; and AED.
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and facilitate youth development programming.
Excellent interpersonal communications and mediation skills.
Willingness to work with people of diverse populations.
Demonstrated commitment to working with school age children in an enrichment setting.
Preferred:
Minimum 6 months experience working with school-aged youth.
Degree in education, recreation or field related to child care
Supervisory/management experience.
Multilingual
Knowledge of Trauma Informed and Youth Development best practices

5. Work Conditions:
Ability to move throughout a school building regularly throughout the day.
Must be able to actively participate in youth games/activities.
Work environments range from quiet work areas to busy, noisy indoor and outdoor spaces with several groups talking amongst themselves concurrently.
May be exposed to verbal outbursts, physical actions or bodily fluids as part of the environment.
Perform all physical aspects of the position, including moving around, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.
Ability to recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous/dangerous situations.
