Southern lllinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Instructor to assume the duties of Director of the SIUE Suzuki Program and instructor of undergraduate and graduate Suzuki pedagogy courses. The successful candidate must be a Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) Violin Teacher Trainer, will administer a nationally recognized Suzuki String Program, and be able to successfully attract and retain student participants to both the community (pre-college) program as well as the university Suzuki Pedagogy program. The candidate will lead by example by demonstrating commitment and collegiality with fellow faculty, build community engagement, and foster music education in children in a nurturing environment.

For over 60 years, the SIUE Department of Music has been preparing musicians for fulfilling careers. The faculty consists of distinguished artist-educators and scholars fully committed to their students' success. The department offers degrees in classical performance, jazz performance, music education, theory/composition, music history/literature, musical theater, and music business. The music degree programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Our alumni work in all music fields worldwide.

The SIUE Suzuki Program, approved by the SAA as a long-term training program, has been an integral part of the Music Department since the University was founded. In 1965, the University identified that training Suzuki teachers was important and could be pioneered by SIUE. Established by John Kendall as the first national university long-term training program, it currently serves an average of 194 students (birth-adult) in the Edwardsville Community through Suzuki lessons taught by the Director and on average 8 other faculty members and 3 graduate students under the Director's supervision. The Suzuki Program Director is both the violin teacher trainer for university students receiving Suzuki teacher training and the director of the program for community students.

Duties within the Community Program
  • Provide artistic and administrative leadership for a nationally recognized Suzuki String Program; attract and retain pre-college students and family participants in violin, viola, cello, and Early Childhood education. Manage a teaching staff and graduate students, and teach private and group lessons in the SIUE Suzuki community program.
  • Organize and facilitate projects such as the biennial Advanced Ensemble tour; design and manage the Suzuki Program's biennial Suzuki Workshop Weekend; Co-Direct and teach at the Suzuki Program's annual String Development Camp; plan community outreach engagement events including concerts, festivals, All-State clinics, summer workshops, and camps.

Duties within the University Program
  • Teach "Development and Teaching of Strings" (MUS465) and recruit graduate university students wishing to earn Suzuki registered violin teacher training.
  • Collaborate with SIUE University string faculty. Encourage diverse cross-campus involvement and collaborate with other string ensembles (such as playing in the SIUE Orchestra)
  • Provide an environment for high expectations and artistry; develop and foster opportunities for diversity and inclusivity.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Suzuki / SAA credentialed (violin) Teacher Trainer
  • M.M. (or equivalent) degree in violin - Performance or Music Education
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or experience in recruiting and retaining students from a diverse population
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and Suzuki philosophy
  • Established reputation as a Suzuki teacher and pedagogue by having experience training Suzuki violin teachers in Suzuki registered training courses.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with colleagues within and beyond one's primary Suzuki program/studio.
