The College of Education consists of two newly formed academic departments and two centers: The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Community Engagement (TLCE), the Department of Educational Leadership, Research, and Technology (ELRT), Center for Educational Opportunities (CEO), and the Center for School and Community Partnerships. Position Overview:
The Department Head for Teaching, Learning, and Community Engagement (TLCE) is a leader who sets the strategic direction for the department, in support of the vision and mission of the college and the university. The Department Head provides leadership to faculty and staff in the department by building and supporting community, and also by providing a vision for programming growth and improvement.
Department Head Responsibilities: A Department Head in the College of Education provides leadership to faculty and staff in that department by providing a vision for programmatic continuity and/or growth and improvement as needed. The department head provides strategic leadership, insightful evaluation, and sound mentoring and professional development for faculty (all ranks) and staff. As such, the department head is responsible for:
Making hiring decisions in consultation with the dean and in accordance with university policy.
Assigning and managing faculty workload equitably, ensuring alignment with department goals and faculty strengths in teaching, research, and service
Developing and implementing plans for new programs and initiatives that enhance the department's national recognition for high research activity.
Recruiting, retaining, and promoting professional growth among high-quality faculty.
Fostering a culture of research and scholarship encouraging faculty to engage in creative, scholarly, and research activities.
Modeling shared collaboration across all units in the college and with external partners and stakeholders.
Overseeing course scheduling and instruction across a range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Addressing student concerns alongside program coordinators when appropriate.
Administering the department budget.
Overseeing all department business, supervising and working with office staff.
Managing department policy formulation and implementation in consultation with the dean's office.
Managing personnel matters, including conducting annual performance reviews for faculty and staff.
Support student recruitment and retention initiatives, collaborating with faculty to design programs that support student academic success, advising, and mentoring
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Education or closely related field.
Current status as professor or higher with tenure at current institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to build interdisciplinary partnerships within a university and with external organizations.
Outstanding communication skills.
Proven leadership ability and integrity, including developing a vision for the department.
The ability to work productively and collegially while enhancing belonging and community.
Experience in effective planning and implementation of strategic initiatives.
Actively engaged scholar with recent peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and/or external funding able to support the scholarship of new faculty and emerging scholars.
Prior experience as a department chair or head in higher education.
