The Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Department (PERA) is seeking an individual with experience working within a community of diverse students and colleagues. Successful candidates will by their teaching, administration, leadership or service demonstrate they can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the department and our community.
Under the supervision of the Director of Recreation/Associate Professor of the Practice, the Adventure Learning Instructor/Recreation Coordinator will manage all aspects of the climbing wall, will lead the Outdoor Adventure Education program and support the overall recreational programming for the department. This position is responsible for the curriculum development of the PE Climbing Wall classes and the Outdoor Adventure Education program.
This position supervises student workers and serves as risk manager for the climbing wall and outdoor adventure programs. This position provides support and assists the other areas of recreation including the rental center, open recreation and marketing. This position also assists with long-range strategic planning and assessment; developing and administering assessments/evaluations related to student development programs and learning outcomes; maintaining accurate participant and program data and annual reports.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Climbing Wall Instructor & Manager
Teach Physical Education courses in the PE curriculum
Coordinate all aspects of climbing wall operations including license, inspections and risk management
Recruit, hire, train, verify certifications, supervise and evaluate student staff
Outdoor Pursuits Instructor and Rental Center Manager
Coordinate and lead outdoor pursuit trips
Responsible for the skill development through instruction, guidance, and feedback to support growth and ensure program initiatives are accomplished
Ensure risk management best practices are followed
Responsible for inventory, maintenance, sanitization and replacement of outdoor pursuits and rental center equipment
Recruit, hire, train, verify certifications, supervise and evaluate student staff
Secondary Responsibilities
Assist in the coordination of all aspects of the Recreation program
Assist with Marketing, Communications & Promotions
Assist with Open Recreation
Responsible for inventory, maintenance, sanitization and replacement of open recreation equipment
Recruit, hire, train, verify certifications, supervise and evaluate student staff
Engage with students interested in creating new recreational activities
Assist with Special Events Programming and Club Sport Competition Supervision
Serve as a member on the Recreation Committee
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreation or Chair/Director of PERA
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrate experience in Rock Climbing instruction.
Possess the ability to instruct outdoor skills -small group facilitation.
Possess wilderness medicine and/or strong first aid experience.
Demonstrate strong verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies.
Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships.
Exceptional customer service orientation is essential.
Demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions.
Must also be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.
Possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to manage concurrent projects and handle multiple priorities at once.
Must also have a strong focus on attention to detail.
Strong project management skills are essential.
Requirements:
B achelor's degree is required
CWA, PCIA or AMGA Instructor certification required
CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required
WMI Wilderness First Responder certification preferred
Valid driver's license and clearance to drive College vehicles (driving record check required)
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, carry lift over 25-50 lbs., squat, climb, kneel, push/pull, walk for long distances.
The Wellesley College climbing wall is housed in the Keohane Sports Center Field House. It is a 750 sq.ft. climbing wall that was built in August 2011 by High Five Adventure Learning.
