Position Summary:

The Success Coach provides wrap around support and coaching to students in a range of academic planning, individual skills assessment, and early career exploration activities with the Director and other members of Academic Success and Support Programs team. The coach will assist students in identifying academic and career goals in line with students' aptitudes and interests, and help them select courses consistent with their developing goals and interests. Coaches will monitor academic progress and social/emotional adjustment factors that might impact academic persistence. They must be able to engage meaningfully and form connections with individual students, as well as work collaboratively with departments across the campus, making appropriate referrals as needed to ensure the student experiences holistic services. Previous experience working with Latinx students in an academic coaching, advising, mentoring or career exploration capacity strongly desired.


Description of Key Responsibilities:



  • Provides academic exploration and registration guidance for students pursuing or considering majors and minors and helps them make informed decisions about necessary academic adjustments.

  • Documents advising discussions, and communicates information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.

  • Acts as a resource to students in matters related to understanding college policies, academic requirements, academic appeals and other processes that might affect the student's progress through their academic program of study.

  • Facilitates and supports active student engagement with Dyson Wellness Center, Student Disability Services, Cardinal Operation Hope and Help, Career Development, Cardinal First and Financial Aid, Academic Resource Centers (Writing, Speaking, Math).

  • Develops and/or delivers comprehensive academic resources, workshops, and academic planning tools grounded in best practices, academic coaching, and advising techniques to respond to the unique needs of students of all backgrounds and populations.

  • Responds to faculty/staff submitted Early Alerts and supports students in establishing goals to promote success.

  • Aids students in improving educational strategies such as effective study habits, time management skills, and developing a supportive educational environment.

  • Helps students develop individualized plans for academic improvement and monitor their progress toward their set goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, mental or physical disability, and religious background of all students, faculty and staff, and with all individuals encountered in the performance of required duties.

  • Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in communicating with faculty, staff, students, and with others, as well as a sensitivity to a person's needs and conditions.

  • Ability to manage multiple activities concurrently in a high-volume environment, to continually monitor their status and to prioritize activities so that deadlines are met and overall office effectiveness is maximized. These characteristics require an individual who is well-organized, detail-oriented, flexible, with the ability to work without direct supervision.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and effectively as a member of a staff where cooperation and teamwork are essential.

  • Some hours outside of Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm may be required to support campus events, peak enrollment & registration periods, and to complete time sensitive projects.





Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Success Coach will work with a caseload of students, assigned based on academic and career interests, as well as academic risk factors. The Success Coach will provide holistic support, monitor the student's academic progress and achievement of personal and educational goals, and provide additional campus resource referrals as needed.


Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, counseling, higher education, or related field required. Master's degree strongly preferred. Strong desire for bilingual (English/Spanish) applicants.


Experience:

Two years of professional experience working in direct service to minoritized or underrepresented students within a higher education setting. An understanding of effective learning strategies and at least one year of experience providing one-on-one academic support and or direct academic coaching support to students. Demonstrated understanding and strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Experience working on academic plans and working with students with disabilities preferred. Previous experience with Ellucian Colleague Student Planning, MyMajors, iStartStrong, or the Strong Interest Inventory a plus.
