JOB OVERVIEW:



The Packaging Mechanic has responsibility to keep the plant running smoothly and efficiently with a particular focus on maintaining and attending the high-speed packaging equipment. In addition to taking responsibility for the machine maintenance, the technician works together with the Maintenance Supervisor, Production Supervisors and Leaders, other Maintenance Technicians, and the broader team to identify and execute ideas to continuously improve production. This position requires exceptional mechanical, electrical, controls, and troubleshooting skills with a problem-solving approach.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance and support plant high-speed packaging line(s) to maximize equipment availability and optimize performance, yield, and costs.

  • Complete all reactive and preventative maintenance safely, effectively, and with the appropriate sense of urgency.

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and mechanical equipment problems including basic programming and PLC's.

  • Assist in the planning process by identifying improvement ideas, spare parts, and work required to optimize the maintenance and upkeep of high-speed packaging equipment throughout the facility.

  • Partner with operations, engineering, safety, and quality to ensure compatibility of equipment with production needs.

  • Evaluate production line processes and help identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Optimize overall equipment effectiveness by improving reliability, process capability, and machine rate while maintaining and improving safety and quality standards.

  • Build relationships with high-speed equipment manufacturers to facilitate opportunities for education and continuous improvement.

  • Work with the machine operators to provide feedback, education, and expertise on machine operation and basic troubleshooting.

  • Work with contractors to perform required calibrations and validations as assigned.

  • Work with the broader maintenance team to complete more complicated tasks.




JOB EXPERIENCE
:



  • 5+ years of high-speed packaging maintenance and operation highly desired

  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing setting, preferably food production.




KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:



  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and basic machine programing issues.

  • Ability to establish basic programs and recipes in equipment controls.

  • Experience with automated packaging and material handling equipment.

  • Ability to use power tools (drill, grinder, impact, saw, etc.).

  • Strong problem-solving abilities

  • Mechanical and Electrical background

  • Equipment controls, programming, and manufacturing technologies.

  • Developed listening, verbal, and written communication skills including email.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and detail oriented.

  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (email), MS Teams.

  • Proficiency in computer skills including central maintenance management systems (CMMS).

  • Must be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities

  • Must be a problem-solver who uses good judgement

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred

  • Basic refrigeration knowledge preferred




EDUCATION:



  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)




PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Standing, walking, using hands and arms to feel and reach.

  • Ability to walk up and down stairs and ramps.

  • Ability to climb ladders.

  • Regularly or routinely lifting or handling boxes/bags/equipment up to 50 lbs.

  • Routinely bending, stooping, and kneeling.

  • Regularly pushing or pulling sizeable equipment from a standing position.

  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Use of personal protective equipment including respirators, hearing protection, eye protection, and head protection.



  • The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.




WORKING CONDITIONS:



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and extreme cold. Daily work in refrigerated environment. It may also require working at elevated heights. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and talk or hear.
