Job Description:

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility will be in assisting ongoing efforts aimed at developing and applying novel genomic risk assessment tools (i.e., polygenic risk scores, local ancestry analysis) in neurodegenerative diseases. This involves processing and reviewing raw and analyzed genomic data, the application of Linux-based software, basic knowledge in statistics and computational programming (e.g., R software, matlab). Secondary responsibilities may include assistance in maintaining database entry of sensitive data related to research participants and the review of MRI images for data quality. The ideal candidate for this position is detail oriented, has strong communication skills, is organized, and is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the process of genomic and brain imaging processing and laboratory techniques common to biomedical research.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Under close supervision, for carrying out genomic research to investigate the genetic underpinnings of aging and neurodegenerative disorders in diverse populations. This role will contribute to advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and potential therapeutic targets.

  • Under close supervision, conducting statistical analyses to identify genetic variants associated with neurodegenerative diseases. This includes utilizing bioinformatics tools and resources for data processing and interpretation and implementing quality control procedures to ensure the reliability of genetic data.

  • The candidate will assist in prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals. They may present research results at conferences and scientific meetings and prepare reports and presentations for non-technical audiences.

  • Maintain data for data integrity evaluation and correction in database applications.

  • Under close supervision, produce data reports and lists that are organized in meaningful ways with direction from the PI.

  • Assist in preparing slide presentations and graphics using multiple software packages for scientific presentations and publications.

  • Assist with scripting for integrating multiple data sources for computational data tracking and analysis.

  • Assist in the preparation of data for grant and NIH progress reports.

  • Track collection, transfer, and processing of weekly phantom QA scans across multiple sites.

  • Communicate with sites and programming staff as necessary to ensure QA scans are regularly collected and processed.

  • Monitor measures derived from QA scans and visually inspect anomalous scans and associated graphs

  • Transfer QA scans for expert review as needed, using independent judgment. Notify appropriate personnel of possible scanner instability.

  • Generate graphs of QA metrics and participate in monthly QA work group meetings

  • Familiarity with structural and functional MRI research.

  • Familiarity with the scientific method and research design and experience with human subject research.

  • Assist with performing detailed computerized neuroanatomic image processing, including registration of misaligned image sets, isolation of brain voxels, spatial filtering, structural MR segmentation, parcellation, and white matter analysis using specialized computer software.

  • Under close supervision, conduct computerized quality review of brain images for artifacts and technical errors. Assist in advising PI of abnormal computer processing results generated during review. Prioritize cases for motion correction or neuroanatomical delineation.

  • Under close supervision, manually review and edit segmented regions of interest; maintain reliability standards for manual editing procedures, visualization, and manipulation of the resulting images.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining manuals for laboratory procedures, database usage, and neuroanatomic image processing instructions. Includes figures and examples for training and reliability purposes.
