Position Overview:



The Tax Accountant serves as a vital member of our Indirect Tax team and reports to the Manager - Indirect Tax Compliance. Responsibilities:



Legal and Fiscal:


  • Analyze, prepare, and file U.S. motor fuel and sales/use tax returns, ensuring timely remittance of tax payments.


  • Conduct research on tax requirements when expanding into new jurisdictions, providing support to the Sr. Manager - Indirect Tax.


  • Assist in defending against jurisdictional tax audits under the guidance of the Sr. Manager - Indirect Tax.


  • Respond promptly to tax notices, assessments, and general inquiries.


  • Ensure the timely implementation of tax rates and rules within RightAngle, third-party tax determination systems, or SAP S/4 HANA updates.




Financial Stewardship:


  • Prepare monthly balance sheet tax reconciliations, ensuring timely resolution of open balances.


  • Maintain awareness of statute limitations for recovering overpaid taxes and actively monitor and pursue recovery.


  • Deliver key performance indicators (KPIs) through tax scorecards.


  • Follow internal tax controls and processes to ensure compliance.




Commercial Mindset and Customer Focus:


  • Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve tax-related disputes with customers and vendors, adhering to service level agreements.


  • Understand the tax implications of the company's business model within assigned states.


  • Work with in-house Tax Counsel to perform tax research using resources like CCH, propose procedural changes, identify opportunities, and escalate issues when necessary.




Technology and Innovation:


  • Maintain a mindset of continuous improvement, focusing on eliminating, standardizing, simplifying, and automating processes.


  • Support the organization's SAP S/4 HANA journey.


  • Troubleshoot process breakdowns, identify root causes, and collaborate with internal IT teams to find solutions.





Experience and Qualifications:




Required Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, finance or related filed.


  • 3+ years of indirect tax experience.


  • Proficiency in utilizing SAP and Microsoft suite of applications.


  • Exceptional time management skills, enabling the successful handling of multiple tasks within specified deadlines


  • Maintain composure and productivity in stressful conditions


  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership and accountability for your responsibilities.


  • Dedication to fostering a collaborative and teamwork-oriented work environment.


  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication (oral and written), and interpersonal skills





Preferred Education and Experience:



  • 5+ years of motor fuels, sales and use tax compliance, advisory, or audit experience within the downstream oil and gas industry.


  • Experience with tax reporting applications such as OneSource or Avalara.


  • Knowledge of refinery, trading, terminals, and pipeline operations is a plus.


  • Working knowledge of RightAngle.


  • Strong research skills using CCH or similar platforms.
