Director, Pharmacy Services, Acute Care

Position Summary:

UTHealth Houston established the John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center to support innovative behavioral health research, education, and patient care. The new academic psychiatric hospital and the nearby UTHealth Houston Harris County Psychiatric Center combine to create the UTHealth Houston Behavioral Sciences Campus and the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the country with 538 beds.

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Director of Pharmacy Services, Acute Care to ensure patient's pharmaceutical needs are effectively met by establishing staffing mix, policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of services. The Director will oversee the integration of pharmacy practice within hospital operations by coordinating resources to provide maximum level of services to patients and the customer.

The Director of Pharmacy Services, Acute Care will lead a team of twenty-five direct reports, so experience managing a team within an in-patient hospital is required. The Director will also be familiar with in-patient pharmacy regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will also have experience leading performance improvement projects as they will plan, organize, and direct pharmacy department efforts to monitor the quality and the effectiveness of pharmacy programs.

Candidates should have at least five (5) years of experience with at least two years supervisory or leadership experience preferred. The Director should be data-driven, metrics focused, and a team player. S olid communication skills are critical for success in this role as the incumbent will regularly liaise between the medical staff and pharmacy department. Experience with Epic is preferred.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Manages drug utilization and medication use processes including prescribing, dispensing, administering, managing clinical programs and monitoring patient outcomes to ensure patient safety.
2. Develops, implements, and achieves business goals by effectively planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing all pharmacy service programs to provide efficient and effective systems.
3. Register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as the Pharmacist I Charge/Consultant of Record as assigned location.
4. Actively participates in departmental budget preparation and is responsible for expense and revenue performance in assigned cost center. Effectively monitors and controls the purchasing and inventory management processes. Provides timely reporting and variance explanations to operations and finance departments as required.
5. Establishes and monitors standards for safe, efficiently organized an orderly practice and work environment ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
6. Ensure ongoing compliance with Joint Commission standards on Medication Management and Antibiotic Stewardship and compliance with all other regulatory agency standards.
7. Manages Human Resources activities of department pertaining to: recruitment, selection, hiring, disciplinary actions, terminations, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
8. Coordinate and direct the activities of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee by working closely with the physician chair of the P&T Committee
9. Prepare and submit productivity, management and other reports according to a schedule and ad hoc requests.
10. Primary customer contact responsible for managing and maintaining the customer relationship including conducting quarterly business reviews as required.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

• Current pharmacist license in good standing with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
• Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
• Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology.
• Business acumen including profit/loss understanding, contract negotiations, and GPO function required.
• Problem solving ability and analytical thinking required.

Minimum Education:

Bachelors of Science or PharmD from and ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of 5 years experience required with at least two years supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:
