As the University's largest and most varied academic unit, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is comprised of artists, learners, performers, scholars, scientists, and teachers across 21+ departments, programs, schools, and centers and acts as a central hub where many of the University's disciplines intersect. Nearly all 6,000 undergraduates at the University take liberal arts courses with us, and about one-third of these students declare a first major in a CAHSS program. Most of our departments, programs and schools offer master's or doctoral programs. Position Summary


The Department of Anthropology is seeking Adjunct Instructor(s) for the 2024/25 Academic Year. Adjunct Instructor(s) who can teach our "Humankind in Context" (ANTH 1010, or another common curriculum anthropology course, spring 2025 quarter), "Museums and Public Culture" (ANTH 2600, spring 2025 quarter), "Museums and Their Visitors" (ANTH 3661, spring 2025 quarter), "Archaeology elective, specific topic open" (ANTH 3XXX, spring 2025 quarter), and "Cultural Anthropology elective, specific topic open" (ANTH 3XXX, spring 2025 quarter). DU is on a 10-week quarter system and we are looking for instructors who can offer courses in-person on the DU campus. Ideally, we are looking for instructors who can also provide critical and historically grounded context to the concepts covered. Preference will be given to instructors with relevant prior teaching experience. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to integrate content and issues relating to, and to work effectively with, diverse populations.


Essential Functions


Prepare lectures / class sessions that cover the required material, design assignments that test the students' learning with reference to the stated Student Learning Outcomes, grade assignments, and hold regular office hours (in-person or virtually).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate the real-world relevance of anthropological ideas to students from diverse populations
  • Ability to create a class environment that is inclusive of all students.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology, or Master's degree in Anthropology plus significant professional experience required.
  • At least one prior term as independent instructor or GTA leading independent class sessions required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least partial completion of a PhD in Anthropology or completed PhD in Anthropology preferred.
  • Experience as an independent instructor preferred.

Work Schedule


While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Course Rate


Adjunct faculty are compensated at a rate of $5,060.00 per 4-credit course.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
