Reporting to the Dean of the School of Social and Natural Sciences, the Coral & Marine Microbiology Laboratory Manager designs and executes experiments with corals, cultured microbes, and molecular benchwork. The Coral & Marine Microbiology Laboratory Manager assists students on projects, designs, manages coral husbandry, and acts as a general lab manager.
Essential Functions/Characteristics
Maintain the temperate corals and temperate coral husbandry aquatic systems and husbandry, including: health assessment of living animals, water quality, feeding, biofouling management (cleaning corals and surfaces).
Maintain laboratory bacterial culture collections in cold storage and in active culture.
Design, conceive, and execute lab experiments, including probiotics testing, culturing, and extraction; coral feeding assays; microbiology and molecular benchwork experimentation.
Make microbiological culturing media and solutions.
Coordinate student work shifts.
Train, mentor, and follow up with students in husbandry tasks.
Build and plumb new aquarium and life support systems when needed.
Manage and oversee the "dry lab" located in MNS109, as well as the bench and shelving space to keep it clean and organized.
Coordinate and oversee laboratory inventory, ordering, and organization.
Coordinate the management and cleaning of glassware and bench space.
Coordinate instrument care and maintenance.
Coordinate laboratory waste removal.
Coordinate and monitor cold storage and cold collections.
Connect users, including students, staff, or faculty, with shared instruments, equipment, and supplies, in shared molecular space such as MNS 105 and MNS 106.
Train users, including students, staff, or faculty, on Molecular Lab use guidelines and basic instrument use (not including flow cytometer, QPCR machine, or fluorescence and confocal microscopes).
Provide support and coordination of undergraduate research projects.
Design and carry out field collections and experiments, via swimming and snorkeling.
Create images, through microscopy and photography, and document specimens and experiments.
Contribute to research manuscripts and grant reports.
Prepare reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and documentation of procedures.
Perform data collection and data entry.
Attend regular meetings with PI, lab group, and with other collaborators.
Attend and give presentations at local, regional, and national conferences.
Design, conceive, and execute outreach activities with the rest of the lab, such as, a Waterfire exhibit, K-12 touch tanks and other school visits and tours, on-campus tours and visits, annual RISE programming.
Maintain organization of shared laboratory files and documentation.
Other Duties
Perform regular maintenance and monitoring of the Astrangia poculata exhibit at the Audubon Society Aquarium, Bristol, RI.
Provide periodic assistance to Wet Lab operations such as additional Audubon exhibits, Wet Lab animal husbandry.
This is a grant-funded position that is contingent upon the existence and availability of external funding.
Bachelor's degree in biology, marine biology or a related field.
Experience in coral rearing and aquatic systems.
Excellent organization skills to manage time to meet workload and deadline demands.
Excellent interpersonal skills in verbal and written communication to a wide variety of audiences including guests, volunteers, students and staff to influence productive outcomes.
Able to work independently while maintaining consistent and frequent communication with supervisor.
Proficiency in MS Office programs with the ability to collect and report on data and to prepare written reports and grant information.
Must have swimming ability.
Must have valid driver's license.
Must be able to do periodic heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
