The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago is a distinguished hub of excellence. The department is committed to delivering exceptional clinical care, cutting-edge research, and comprehensive education. With an expert team comprised of trauma, hand, shoulder/elbow, foot/ankle, joint replacement, pediatric, spine, oncology, rehabilitation and sports medicine specialists, the department addresses a wide array of orthopaedic conditions. The department has gained national recognition as a leader in orthopedic trauma and oncology, showcasing its expertise. The orthopaedic surgeons deliver specialized, comprehensive care for the most acute and complex orthopaedic conditions. A testament to their expertise, our faculty proudly serves as the team orthopaedic / rehabilitation specialists for the 2021 WNBA National Champions, the Chicago Sky.


The department, home to 30 faculty and clinical associates, has significantly expanded in size since its founding as a department in 2013. Our faculty members have garnered national recognition for their exceptional contributions in education, leadership in national organizations, and clinical excellence. We are proud to have successfully recruited female faculty, with eight clinical faculty members being women. Our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the department, the community we serve, and the specialty of orthopaedics is unwavering. Through the generosity of Barbara and Michael Simon, MD, the Simon Diversity Scholar Fund was created in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine. Simon Diversity Scholars are selected through an application process and salary support is provided to allow the Scholar to devote time to building diversity in orthopaedic surgery, both within and outside the University of Chicago.


The department has been at the forefront of transformative multidisciplinary initiatives, including successfully launching new clinical programs encompassing spine, trauma, primary care sports medicine, bone infections, and bone health.



Job Summary

The job provides leadership and direction through managers responsible for the financial and management functions of a department in support of teaching, medical research and clinical care. Facilitates research initiatives of the faculty and staff. Develops departmental plans. Provides leadership and supervision to a large staff of exempt and non-exempt employees, including management teams.


The Executive Administrator (EA) is responsible for the administrative oversight of the department, which includes surgical and nonsurgical faculty, clinical associates, and advanced practice providers (APPs). The EA serves as the chief operating and fiscal officer for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine and is accountable for an all-funds budget of $10M. The EA will plan, coordinate, and direct the Department's broad and complex financial and management functions supporting clinical care, research, and medical education. The EA serves as a member of the Executive Committee led by the Vice Chairs/Directors and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.


The Department's clinical programs continue to demonstrate excellence across the broad spectrum of subspecialty patient care services to treat our highly complex and diverse patient population. The EA oversees the operational aspects of clinical programs and works with clinical leaders to facilitate new initiatives. On an annual basis, the Department's clinical faculty generates over 1.5 million wRVUs, representing nearly 255,000 outpatient visits and 65,000 ER visits. The Department's inpatient services generate nearly 17,000 admissions per year.


The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine consists of a highly competitive orthopaedic residency program and four fellowship programs, which annually train 25 residents and seven fellows.



Responsibilities



  • Reporting to the Department Chair, the Executive Administrator will develop short and long-term business plans for the Department. With a plan to expand into multiple suburban locations, the EA will work to plan and execute this plan along with health system administration.


  • S/he will work with the Chair, Section Chiefs, and their respective Section Administrators to conduct ongoing assessments of and respond to growth opportunities and unmet needs within the Department.


  • The EA provides programmatic leadership and input for all strategic plan implementation processes.


  • Work with the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) and University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) leadership to implement new and expanded service lines, strategic alliances, and new clinical sites. Oversee space assignments and prioritize capital requests, including equipment and space renovations.


  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership by actively participating in all programs and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of all programs.


  • S/he will identify opportunities to leverage cross-program strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges.


  • Fosters a safe and ethical environment, creating accountability to high organizational standards.


  • Engages team development through coaching, goal setting, hiring, mentorship, talent management, best practices, and accountability.


  • Provides leadership to managers within a department to support teaching, medical research and clinical care. Facilitates research initiatives of the faculty and staff.


  • Directs department priorities, allocates resources, and executes strategic plans.


  • Oversees non-medical activities of the department. Manages policy development and implementation in various departmental areas.


  • Performs other related work as needed.





Minimum Qualifications




Education:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 10+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Experience:



  • Progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience.


  • Healthcare and/or academic medical experience.


  • Experience with revenue cycle for hospital and professional fee billing.


  • Directly related financial and budget development experience in a complex environment.


  • Experience working in a fiscally responsible, highly regulated business setting that regularly employs benchmarking.


  • Proficient mathematical and analytical skills, including data sets and data aggregation.


  • Knowledge of research funding and appreciation for working in a research-intensive academic culture.
