Job Description:

Essential Duties:


  • Collects and properly labels blood, urine and other bodily fluids to conduct tests ordered by healthcare providers

  • Analyzes and documents the chemical content of bodily fluids with accuracy and efficiency adhering to Good Laboratory Practice standards

  • Prepares, stains, and labels slides; and keep records of tests

  • Uses laboratory equipment to look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms

  • Processes all samples and perform in house testing according to written laboratory procedures

  • Performs testing and verifies all test results prior to release for charting

  • Consults with physicians and other medical professionals on staff as appropriate regarding laboratory tests

  • Follows established safety guidelines for working in the Medical Laboratory

  • Records daily temperatures for equipment and for laboratory area. Troubleshoots any deviations to correct abnormal readings

  • Performs and documents all preventive maintenance for equipment and instrumentation

  • Performs and documents all calibrations, quality control and quality assessment procedures according to manufacturer's instructions and/or current laboratory policy.

  • Investigates any deviations from expected results or expected instrument performance and takes action as directed by laboratory procedure such as troubleshooting and/or completion of Corrective Action Form

  • Notifies the Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Director and/or the Technical Consultant if a test system is out of control and established procedures for troubleshooting do not solve the problem

  • Receives, processes and performs Proficiency Test samples in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and established laboratory protocol. Maintains accurate record of PT receipt, results and scores as directed.

  • Maintains sufficient reagent and supply inventory

  • Files all paperwork according to laboratory procedures. Laboratory records are maintained for two years

  • Ensures appropriate records, reports, claims and correspondences necessary and appropriate in connection with all examinations, procedures and other professional services rendered in the clinic are kept and maintained

  • Participates in quality improvement, educational programs, or other patient care management programs established by or in conjunction with clinic services

  • Assists in the resolution of patient complaints, requests and inquiries

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education/Experience:

Completion of Associate's Degree in Applied Science and Medical Laboratory Technician Certification or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of related experience in hospital, clinical setting or related field preferred.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to use original or innovative techniques or styles to provide effective communication on complex topics to management.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates and Licenses:

Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) required.

Computer Skills:

Demonstrate working knowledge of the Internet, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel applications, electronic health record software, and laboratory information system software.

Other:

Must be able to drive and have access to a car; maintain valid driver's license and auto liability insurance.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is exposed to a medical laboratory environment having direct contact with patients. Position necessitates bending, stooping, twisting, turning, walking, climbing step stools, sitting and standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and maneuver 15 pounds.
