Job Description

Functional Job Summary:

This job family brings engineering discipline and best practices to investigating, architecting, designing, and implementing automated solutions for robust platform support of applications. This includes adding new features and functions to existing solutions, which meet Standard Insurance’s business needs.

Investigation: Investigation starts with understanding the business problem to be solved. SRE may lead or participate in requirements gathering that will feed an iterative based methodology. Multiple application technologies, and project/product needs are commonly identified, and are integrated into existing, or new solutions. SRE’s are expected to be proficient at investigative process, which enables designing, and implementing these solutions.

Architect and Design: Designing solutions using agile methodology and DevOps best practices is the expectation. SRE can design and develop automation solutions for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) application delivery pipeline(s) while also being responsible for the availability, latency, monitoring and capacity planning of the underlying platform that hosts the application. They will work collaboratively with software architects, developers, to design, develop, and implement automation frameworks, strategies, and solutions to ensure application reliability and improve Cycle Time. SREs are expected to utilize open-source, third-party and internally developed solutions to meet business needs. Software development in multiple modern languages is required with good proficiency. All architecture, and design is expected to adhere to enterprise level application security best practices. SREs are expected to be embedded in cross functional teams consisting of Software Engineers and play multiple roles in support of application services from concept to operations and support as required by the team.

Implement: SREs are expected to build and automate the application Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline(s), including tool framework, and processes. SREs focus on creating an environment consisting of high amount of automation to support build, deployment, releases, performance, latency, efficiency, monitoring and capacity planning for the team’s platform infrastructure. Knowledge or proficiency in the current industry toolsets, and best practices for this purpose is required.

SREs must possess and demonstrate systems and critical thinking and leverage that in a collaborative team-based environment. The ability to play varying roles comfortably is required. They must be self-directed and can technically lead at a senior level. Working in a multi-vendor, off shore model is now the norm in the industry and SREs need to know how to be successful in this model.

The skills, languages and/or platforms the SREs should be familiar with are:

  • Java – Including development of Services and/or Micro-Services
  • .Net, C++
  • Salesforce.Com or Force.com
  • Angular, HTML5 with Responsive Design
  • REST
  • Perl, Python, Groovy, Gradle, JavaScript, Terraform and PHP
  • Git, TFS, Jira, Jenkins, Maven, and XL Deploy/Release
  • Familiarity with AWS, Azure or other Cloud services
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes or other containers
  • Familiarity with Ansible, Puppet
  • Familiarity with Nagios, AppDynamics, or similar monitoring and alerting tools
  • Familiarity with Slack, Mattermost or other collaboration and ChatOps tools
  • Familiarity with middleware (JBoss, WAS, Apache), Operating Systems (Linux, CentOS, Windows, Ubuntu), Integration (Camel, WAS MQ), Portal and ECM systems
  • Familiarity with LAN/WAN, Storage and Identity management systems
  • Experience with non-production test environment creation, and configuration, utilizing ‘infrastructure-as-code’
  • Operationalizing horizontally scalable data stores and configuring systems for high reliability
  • Running automated crash tests to test assumptions about reliability and develop mitigation strategies
  • Reviewing designs with an eye toward increasing the holistic stability the platform and identifying potential risks
  • Improving monitoring and alerting systems
  • Troubleshooting platform and infrastructure issues in collaboration with Operations teams
  • Writing runbooks and improving documentation
  • Experience or comfort operating in a distributed, non-homogeneous technology environment

KNOWLEDGE: Uses professional concepts; applies company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.

JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Has internal and some external contacts.

SUPERVISION: Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.
