Position Purpose:

The Building Service Technician I - Apprentice is an entry-level position in the Trades Apprentice Program. The Apprentice will develop a specified level of skill and proficiency in the execution of duties related to general maintenance and repair at Dartmouth College. This role will participate in instructor-led and on-the-job training for up to two years.


Performs maintenance and repairs on Dartmouth College academic and administrative buildings, structures, fixtures, and utilities, both on a scheduled work order basis and in response to emergencies. This work is carried out under general or direct supervision, utilizing a variety of trade practices associated with the Equipment Maintenance Shop. Tasks range from simple to more complex, depending on the level of supervision required. Work location may be anywhere on the Dartmouth campus.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:



  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Mechanically inclined with a desire to obtain experience and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems and controls.

  • Valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy

  • Ability to use common hand tools such as screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches and power tools, including drills, hammer drills, reciprocating saw

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying problem-solving solid skills.

  • Ability to learn Dartmouth College construction standards.

  • Strong customer service and good communication skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.

  • Computer skills include basic word processing, email, and spreadsheets. Smartphone skills to use vendor software for programming various basic electric components.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate issues and develop creating responsive solutions.

  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.

  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and strenuous conditions.

  • Is capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and responding to alarms, including potentially hazardous environments.

  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

  • Willingness to obtain further (vendor) training, whether online, locally, in person, or remotely.




Must have completed the following training before performing work to which the training relates:




  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety-related work practices

  • Lock-out/tag-out

  • Respirator training

  • Fall Protection

  • Working in confined spaces

  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training

  • Asbestos awareness training

Trades Apprentice Program Requirements




  • Must successfully complete all Trades Apprentice Program components, including 288 hours of instructor-led training, hands-on learning, and on-the-job experience. Progress will be assessed throughout the program, and employees must demonstrate proficiency in required areas to advance. The program duration may be shortened based on prior work experience or the ability to master the required skills quickly.

Training Expectations




  • The apprentice will assist senior trades professionals, such as Building Service, HVAC, and Plumbing Technicians, in project and repair work to gain hands-on experience. This includes requesting work orders, advising the supervisor of materials/services required for repairs, and assisting senior trades in project/repair work to further knowledge. As they progress through the program, they will perform this work independently.

  • Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.




As the employee progress through the apprentice program, they will begin working independently in the following tasks:




  • Following established procedures to perform prescribed preventive maintenance and reactive tasks on Dartmouth College buildings, equipment, and utility systems. For example: checks plumbing and heating systems for leaks, defects in equipment, and malfunctions; lubricates moving parts of equipment; replaces worn/corroded parts such as belts and pulleys, filters, wiring, fixtures, and controls; checks/replaces fluid in hydraulic devices, etc.

  • In response to assigned work orders, working with peers and senior building service technicians, performs scheduled preventative maintenance, reviews equipment operation and impact to associated equipment and systems.

  • Independently performs a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of Dartmouth College buildings, structures, and associated fixtures and utilities, i.e., repair/replace damaged electrical fixtures and controls; repair/replace plumbing fixtures, piping, or fittings; install/repair radiators and associated piping, valves, fittings, and equipment.

  • Develop skills by working with senior building automation technicians to respond to and minimize all Energy Management System computer alarms and adjust as necessary. Adjustments may be physically at the field devices and/or using the control software to correct.

  • Develop skills by observing and assisting peers in performing response, problem diagnosis, and repair in response to alarms or calls from administrators, staff, and faculty.

  • Develop proficiencies in the campus work order system Planon. Technicians should be able to create, manage, and close work orders in Planon Mobil and desktop
