The UMass Amherst Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE) plays a critical role in establishing the long-term value of the modern, land-grant research university. CAFE advances academic research and practical solutions to issues and problems that impact the well-being of people, communities, farms, businesses, and natural systems within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Job Description
The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for the Director of the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE) and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Agricultural Research and Engagement. The successful candidate will also serve as Director for both UMass Extension and the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station. The position reports to the Dean, College of Natural Sciences and to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement. The position will include an underlying academic appointment as either a tenure system faculty member or Extension faculty. The academic area of the appointment will be in an area jointly with the CAFE.
CAFE is comprised of UMass Extension, the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station, the UMass Cranberry Station, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Research Center. CAFE has made a strategic commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach in which academic research and the resulting scholarship is integrated with educational programs, resources, tools or technologies that meet the needs of citizens, communities, organizations, businesses, government agencies, or policy-makers. This position requires dynamic, transformational leadership to champion the reinvention of the land-grant mission for the 21st century and help position the University of Massachusetts Amherst as the flagship public campus of America's education state.

The successful candidate must have an established record of executive leadership in a public or private setting related to agriculture, food, or the environment; significant experience in programmatic leadership; and a track record of developing fiscal and management systems for progressive change. The candidate should be able to provide leadership for the development of innovative, entrepreneurial, academic, and educational activities.
