The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History is part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a Center within the UBC for Academic and Community Engagement, we have a central role in supporting the University's academic mission. We have a commitment to broaden the range of intellectual discourse about African-Americans and to encourage better understanding of people of the African diaspora and their perspectives on important social and cultural issues.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Public Communication Specialist is responsible for all public information management functions for the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History. The position has direct responsibility for working with on-campus and local media to publicize our work and initiatives. The Public Communication Specialist also manages all Center digital activities on all applicable platforms, manages and updates the Center's website, organizes and implements social media outreach campaigns and organizes the production of in-house publications, and all graphics and design work associated with exhibitions and other programs. This position also works with the Unified Business Cluster (UBC) for Academic and Community Engagement Development Officer to prepare solicitation materials for fundraising activities.
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Skilled and experienced in publications.
Experience in managing and overseeing complex print or digital communications projects from the initial concept to delivery within budget end time parameters.
Knowledge and ability to think strategically in order to develop, implement, and evaluate communications campaigns and techniques that deliver key messages to targeted audiences.
Ability to write and edit clear and effective messages for print and social media/digital communications.
Knowledge of design (i.e., Adobe CS3) and video production software (Mac and PC), principles and concepts to develop collateral print and multimedia content.
Experience creating, sending, and tracking performance of email campaigns using email service provider, applies knowledge of web design, usability and measurement tools for managing web site content and optimizing usage.
Strong multitasking and interpersonal skills, flexibility, able to deal effectively with diverse groups of people at all levels and ability to work in team environment.
Occasional evening hours are required.
