Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director of Education Abroad & International Exchange, the Academic Program Coordinator for Education Abroad manages the development and execution of semester, summer, and short-term international programs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and advises LAS students on global education opportunities at Illinois. Other aspects of global education programming, such as scholarships, exchange student programming, or outreach activities, may be assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
Program Coordination
• Manage an assigned portfolio of education abroad and internationally-focused domestic educational programs including short-term faculty-led, semester, and summer-length programs.
• Administer all levels of assigned program portfolio, including program creation and maintenance in the online study abroad administration database, program budget creation and monitoring, staying current on on-site student support and accommodations services, and managing relations with relevant international, domestic, and on-campus partners.
• Evaluate and implement changes to current education abroad administration policies, practices, and procedures and document individual program management guides for each program within the assigned portfolio.
• Serve on relevant campus and college-level committees dealing with education-abroad initiatives.
• Assist with LASIP participation in campus events, such as Illini Fest, Illinois Abroad, and International Education Week. Lead events such as Pre-departure and Re-entry programs, LAS Study Abroad Fair, and International Exchange Student events.
• Conduct regular site visits to international program sites and make recommendations for the further development of the program to the LASIP leadership team. Will be expected to work nights/weekends when traveling internationally and domestically.
• Collaborate with an assigned portfolio of academic units in LAS and assist the Associate Director, International Programs and Director, International Programs with the development of new programs that serve departmental needs.
• Coordinate and administer on-campus projects and initiatives relating to education abroad as assigned, including but not limited to Incoming exchange student administration, scholarships, DEI initiatives, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
Education Abroad Program Advising
• Advise students on both the assigned portfolio of international programs and programs outside of the assigned portfolio, including programs offered by other units on the Urbana-Champaign campus; match students with appropriate resources for student success abroad, such as the Disability Resources and Educational Services, McKinley Health Center, Gender & Sexuality Resource Center, Neurodiversity Initiative, Illinois Cultural Houses, Women's Resource Center.
• Hold regular advising hours both in-person, online, and in other formats necessary.
• Organize pre-departure and returnee informational and advising sessions for education-abroad students.
• Develop and maintain informational and promotional materials for education abroad programs and resources available on campus to enable their participation in said programs.
• Contribute to the experiential learning and career development components of the LAS student success plan through peer advisor training, academic advisor resource development, and ongoing support.
• In consultation with the Associate Director, supervise undergraduate student employees.
• Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
A total of two (2) years experience in education, training and/or work experience coordinating international programming, experiential learning, student development and/or community engagement in higher education or a professional organization.
Preferred Qualifications
All degree background will receive full consideration. Preference will be given to those with degrees in the liberal arts and sciences. Master's Degree in international education or related field.
One (1) year experience specializing in developing online resources for education abroad or other educational programs; experience managing multiple, simultaneous international education experiences and projects; proficiency in a second language and previous experience studying or living abroad.
