The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Core Facility Research Specialist 2 position. The incumbent contributes to the University's research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Receives and evaluates specimens received by the HIHG Cores and queues to the appropriate workflow
Performs DNA and RNA extractions from a variety of tissues including blood, saliva etc., in preparation for molecular testing
Organizes and prepares kits for specimen collection per study requirements (blood, saliva, other).
Assesses nucleic acid integrity in preparation for molecular applications.
Performs high, medium and low throughput genotyping.
Performs RNA library preparation for Next Generation Sequencing (RNASeq)
Performs DNA library preparation for Whole Genome, whole exome and target enrichment (hybridization) Sequencing
Performs standard molecular techniques such as PRC and sanger sequencing.
Utilizes the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to enter and upload data to track, monitor and execute sample processing.
Evaluates inventory of supplies and reagents, communicate order needs, place orders and verify receipts. Inventory and manage stock as received.
Collaborates on SOP writing, revisions and drafts as needed for experimental platforms offered by the core facility
Keeps all laboratory equipment in good working order, makes minor repairs and communicates with engineers as needed.
Possess the computational skills necessary to acquire proficiency in new software programs, cloud-based tools, online webforms and databases.
Evaluates the availability of resources for research studies and the impact of studies on resources.
Reviews numerous laboratory results and enters results into database.
Excellent record keeping skills for all laboratory work and client interactions.
Able to learn complex molecular genetic techniques.
Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions - HIHG CGT Core Facility Research Specialist 2
Proficient in complex laboratory Information management systems (LIMS) in order to track sample and project progress and keep an organized and detailed laboratory notebook associated with all laboratory procedures
Expertise in multiple QC methods for quantitation and qualitation of DNA and/or RNA such as Nanodrop, Tapestation, BioAnalyzer, Qubit and Gel Electrophoresis.
Proficient in Illumina Infinium genotyping platform and operation of the Tecan EVO liquid handler. Working knowledge of Genome Studio Software.
Expertise in Biobanking handling procedures of a variety of specimen types including DNA, RNA, whole blood, plasma, serum, cell lines, tissue, urine etc.
In addition to operating all standard lab equipment (centrifuges, thermocyclers, etc.), has a working knowledge of specialized lab equipment such as Covaris Adaptive Focused Acoustic Disruptor, ABI QuantStudio, etc.
Working knowledge of several library preparation workflows for Whole Exome, Whole Genome and RNA sequencing applications.
Analyzes data for quality and consistency and reports issues to supervisor.
Tracks project progress and provides status updates to ensure that a given project moves through the pipeline in a timely and efficient manner.
Tracks and orders the reagents needed to complete all daily and complex laboratory tasks such that downtime and spending are minimal.
Review laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments to aid in the design, development and execution of procedures and techniques.
Schedules meetings with company technical support and engineers to resolve experimental and hardware issues
Ensure lab compliance for storage, use and disposal of laboratory chemicals in accordance with policies in hazardous waste, biohazardous waste and chemical hygiene plan. Train employees on these policies.
Ability to multitask across multiple complex and highly specialized molecular genetics platforms and protocols.

Develop, update and follow standard operating procedures.
