Job Description Summary
The Immune Health Initiative at Penn seeks a highly motivated Resource Technologist A to join our team. The candidate would be responsible for processing human biospecimens, including blood and tissue, for a patient-oriented clinical and translational research projects. The candidate will work closely with the Processing Unit manager and team to sort sample priority, follow established standard operating procedures with discerning attention to detail, maintain accurate records using electronic tracking systems, and have a willingness to help advance our team's research mission. The candidate must have the ability and eagerness to flourish in a team setting, can embrace challenges, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience processing human biospecimens and working in a sterile laboratory environment is also required.


Position is contingent upon continued funding.

Job Description

Job Duties:



Sample acquisition, tracking, storage, and organization



  • Process human biospecimens, including blood and tissue, for a variety of clinical trials being conducted throughout the Penn community, including COVID-19/Flu vaccine, autoimmunity, and cancer research trials.

  • Ability to follow established standard procedures, attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability and eagerness to work in a team setting.

  • Work closely with Immune Health Processing Unit manager and lead technician to triage sample allocation. Candidate can demonstrate independent judgement in technique and method selection, protocol design and execution, data analysis and use of standard operating procedures for a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity to meet assigned objectives.

  • Previous experience processing human biospecimens and working in a sterile laboratory environment is required, and candidate should possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills.



  • Help with organization, management, and storage of processed clinical samples using the LabVantage (LIMS) system.

  • Pick up and/or deliver clinical samples at various locations on UPenn's medical campus.




Support in immunological assay execution and development



  • Prepare samples for high-dimensional phenotypic and functional analysis of single cells using flow cytometry and/or CyTOF.

  • Perform other routine laboratory tasks including, but not limited to CBC, ELISA, basic flow cytometry, media preparation, inventory management, and scheduled equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to develop, learn, and execute new assays as necessary.




Data input and management



  • Record clinical sample processing records in computer database.

  • Maintain daily spreadsheets to assure accurate and complete records of patient databases.




Qualifications





  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field with 0-1 years of related experience in handling and processing human biospecimens, including blood and tissue, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Additionally, attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment is required.
