Job Description

The Institute for Medical Translation New Bolton Center (Comparative Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, Animal Model Core, Preclinical Research Services) focuses on studying the structure, function, injury, and repair of the musculoskeletal system. Our mission is to improve the lives of animals and people suffering from disease, deformities, and injuries of the spine and limbs by enhancing our understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal tissue injury and degeneration. We lead the development of grant submissions (NIH, NSF, DOD) of translational research projects and Investigational New Drug (IND)/Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) - enabling pivotal studies for medical product development for various industry partners. These cross-functional teams constitute the foundation of teaching and training of undergraduate and graduate students, fellows, and trainees in an ecosystem of advanced orthopedic surgery and the translational and regulatory sciences.
The Study Director will be responsible for strategic planning and day-to-day management of a complex and broad range of projects conducted with academic and industry collaborators at the Institute for Medical Translation New Bolton Center. He/she will collaborate with Principal Investigators to develop fundable ideas and create budgets, write and review grant proposals, and GLP study protocols. Responsible for liaising with the Institute's Quality Assurance Unit, managing regulatory compliance as it pertains to IACUC, USDA, and 21CFRpart58 (GLP) regulations of the Institute's multi-million-dollar research grants awarded by the federal government, industry partners, private foundations, internal Penn sources, and others. Maintains and expands the business network of collaborators and industry partners, enabling the growth of the Institute's research enterprise. Responsible for strategic communications and collaborations, including oversight of the Institute's website and institutional relationships between the Institute and external research partners around the world. He/she will help develop the team's research strategy and will GLP studies/research in the role of Study Director, ensuring they are conducted safely and according to study protocol (GLP/IACUC). He/she will provide supervision to educators and teams conducting studies and collaborate with peers from other Universities and industry partners. He/she will author GLP Study Reports and provide significant contributions to presentations and manuscripts, including multiple drafts for review and dissemination.




Job Responsibilities



  • Study Director day-to-day management of studies (procedures, funder/sponsor communications etc.)

  • Develops fundable ideas, writes and reviews grant proposals, and GLP study protocols and Final Reports

  • Managing regulatory compliance as it pertains to IACUC, USDA, and 21CFRpart58 (GLP) regulations

  • Maintains and expands the business network of collaborators and industry partners, enabling the growth of the Institute's research enterprise

  • Thorough data analysis, Study Report preparation, responsibilities related to GLP Study execution.

  • Leadership roles related to supervision of more junior lab members

  • Perform additional duties as assigned



  • Oversee day-to-day research project management, coordinate the activities of each research project and support team members

  • Develop, plan and organize all aspects of training, supervising and participating with researchers to collect data

  • Create and oversee operational procedures for data management

  • Create data visualizations and reports on research findings

  • Write grant proposals

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned




Qualifications





  • Masters and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, DVM/VMD preferred.






  • The position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly motivated, independent thinker, and a worker with a desire to work in a complex and high-energy environment. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in regulatory affairs, GLP study directorship, and expertise in animal experiments and animal models for musculoskeletal applications. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated track record of project completion and publications, as well as a high level of scientific rigor.
