Job Title:Research Technician


Department:Arts and Sciences | Evolution Ecology and Organismal Biology



The Research Technician will be expected to maintain and conduct experiments with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal in vitro colonies. The individual will grow AM fungi with transformed carrot roots, lettuce seedlings, and other plants on petri plates filled with minimal media agar. The individual will need to make, sterilize, and pour plates with minimal media agar and various nutrient treatments, maintain AM fungal colonies of Rhizophagus irregularis on petri plates, and set up experiments manipulating nutrient contents. Experiments will be imaged using a Nikon dissecting microscope and analyzed using Nikon Elements software and/or ImageJ. Further downstream analyses could include nutrient analyses of agar content, dissection of hyphal structures, qPCR of active fungal genes, and the addition and tracking of labeled or otherwise tagged nutrients. In addition, the Research Technician will initiate and maintain the project web page, promote the project via twitter, and supervise undergraduate volunteers also working on the project.



Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree, at least 1 year of research experience



Desired qualifications: minimum of 6 months full time work in a laboratory (academic or industrial). In addition, the candidate should have experience with sterile technique; working with dissecting and compound microscopes; and experience identifying AM fungal spores, identifying AM fungal hyphae, extracting AM fungal spores would be preferred.

The pay range for this job profile is $13.89 - $18.51. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
