Responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the set-up and operation of the heart-lung machine and related equipment for open heart surgical patients. Participates in the marketing of the perfusionist service to the Medical staff. Maintains active communication with the Medical staff, peers, and the Perioperative staff. Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

ATTRIBUTES
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing and/or Cardiovascular Perfusion program required.
Valid NYS Perfusion Permit or NYS license in Perfusion.
3-5 years of experience in perfusion preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Practice:
Implements perfusion practice in accordance with hospital policy and procedure, departmental, area and national standards.
Chooses appropriate oxygenator and accessory equipment in accordance with current perfusion standards and medical staff preference.
Assembles, primes and inspects the integrity of the bypass circuit.
Operate heart lung machine and keeps the surgeon informed of patient status. Attempts to maintain normal physiologic parameters according to current perfusion standards of practice during the bypass period (i.e. - blood pressure, blood gas values, blood flow rates).
Interprets lab data and takes appropriate action to correct abnormal values. Works in conjunction with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to provide optimal care.
Recognizes, evaluates and corrects all emergency perfusion situations which may arise during the bypass period.
Prepares and administers antibiotics and other drugs used during the bypass period.
Age Specific Competency Training:
Participates in Age Specific Competency Training, within 12 month period of time and demonstrates the ability to obtain information and assess patient/customer needs
Applies the knowledge of growth and development stages in direct patient/customer interactions, as observed by the supervisor.
Continuing Education:
Completes 100% of hospital-required mandatory in-services.
Participates in presentations of surgical case reviews with peers.
Attends 75% of scheduled monthly in-services.
Maintains 15 CEU per year inclusive of mandatory programs.
Obtains and/or maintains current American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certification with it's CEU and clinical requirements.
Materials Management:
Facilitates the systematic maintenance of material resources to support the Cardiovascular Department functions.
Returns unused supplies to appropriate storage space. Saves damaged supplies for report and return to company for credit. Notifies Nurse Manager of depleted supplies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
