Overview:
The Occupational Health (OHS) Float NP reports directly to the OHS Clinical Executive Director for the Academic Medical Centers. When assigned to cover an OHS clinic, the OHS Float NP reports directly to the OHS Site Director of the clinic for the length of the assignment at that clinic. The Occupational Health (OHS) Float NP may be assigned to any of the OHS clinics to supplement or provider coverage for the clinical needs of the clinic.
The OHS Float NP utilizes clinical skills and occupational health knowledge and experience to provide clinical care to patients in accordance with clinical guidelines and standing orders and case management to facilitate positive outcomes for employees impacted by occupational injury, illness, and/or exposure.
Responsibilities:

• Assesses employees presenting with a variety of simple and complex presentation related to occupational injury, illness, or exposure; develops treatment plans in accordance with established clinical protocols and consideration of all physical and psychosocial factors that may impact the patient situation, and establishes a rapport with patients to provide support, education, and counseling.
• Acts a liaison between the patient and providers to whom he/she is referred. The OHS NP actively guides the employee through matters involving workers' compensation, family medical leave, and accommodation of disabilities.
• Arranges job accommodation and early return to work schedules.
• May also plan and implement occupational health programs and selected health services independently or collaboratively with other members of the occupational health staff.
• Exercises an ability to assess and anticipate occupational health risks throughout the organization by analyzing data to determine occupational health and safety issues and employee groups at risk.
• Utilizes a full range of written and verbal communication techniques to educate people throughout the organization on occupational health and safety issues including the development of health education materials.
• Promotes teamwork and builds relationships within the department and throughout the organization to enhance a health and safety infrastructure; and consults to a wide range of people on issues related to occupational health and safety within the organization.
• Collaborates with occupational health colleagues for the purpose of case review, risk assessment, and program development. Also maintains a relationship with other Human Resources staff and members of Infection Control, Safety, Buildings and Grounds, and Environmental Services.
• Maintains appropriate records and databases to meet all standards and facilitate review of occupational risk for individual employees and the overall organization.
• Gathers and analyzes outcome measures for the purpose of organizational surveillance and program review and development.
• The OHS Float NP may be assigned to any of the OHS clinics. He/she must be flexible and organized and have an ability to identify differences in work practices and workflow at each site. In addition, the OHS Float NP may be assigned to assist with project activity depending upon the clinic need for staffing. The OHS Float NP needs to obtain and maintain credentialing at each site.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
• MA Registered Nurse Practitioner licensure required.
• Certified as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts.
• Current CPR certification required. COHN-S certification preferred.
• A minimum of five years of nursing experience required with a preference of a minimum of two years of occupational health nursing experience.
• Must meet the clinical credentialing requirements of Mass General Brigham.
Skills/Abilities/Other Details:
• Demonstrates a knowledge of medical-surgical nursing, occupational health, infection control principles, OSHA standards, and MDPH and JCAHO regulations as well as an understanding of how to apply this knowledge to medical surveillance and treatment.
• Assess, diagnose and treat work related injuries and illnesses
• Administer immunizations, prescribe medications (to include controlled medications), perform urine drug screening collections, and document accordingly in the Electronic Medical Record.
• Utilizes principles of case management to achieve best outcomes for patients in a cost-effective manner.
• Demonstrates a sense of accountability in monitoring the case and taking appropriate steps to bring about a positive outcome in a resource effective manner.
• Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross functional teams including staff at all levels of the organization
• Ability to develop and build strong relationships with customers
• Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with others of different skill sets, backgrounds an levels within and external to the organization
• Strong problem solving and negotiation skills
• Ability to effectively conduct meetings, both formal and informal
• Requires minimal direction from leadership and possesses the ability to learn quickly
• Demonstrated PC skills, Microsoft applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• No direct reports; may indirectly provide leadership and guidance to less seasoned and new staff
• No direct budgetary responsibility
• Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively using Mass General Brigham resources
Working Conditions:
• On-site position based at an MGB OHS clinic
• The job will require travel between clinic sites as well as participation in rotating after-hours and holiday on-call coverage.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; or hear; use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop; kneel; or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.
• The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Normal office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
