Position Overview

The Engineer Principal applies principles and techniques of electrical engineering to research, develop, design, test, and evaluate next-generation, high-reliability undersea products for SubCom. Acts as central architect of all engineering activities associated with the product's design. Helps define and works from high-level, customer-driven requirements to produce detailed designs and plans for design verification, qualification, and production testing. Uses empirical analysis, experience, and sound engineering judgement to make design decisions between the often-competing requirements of performance, cost, reliability, power dissipation, physical size, schedule, etc. Works with mechanical engineers to ensure designs meet physical, thermal, and environmental requirements. Works with production engineers to transfer designs and ensure their manufacturability and testability of in the factory environment. Creates firmware specifications based on the product's operational requirements. and confirms their correct implementation. Uses strong lab skills to evaluate the suitability of components and subsystems for integration into larger designs. Breadboards and evaluates critical components, circuits, and functions before committing them to use. Performs hands-on evaluation of early design prototypes to ensure compliance with design goals. Able to partition tasks and coordinate work of more-junior engineers to meet overall objectives.


Responsibilities

  • Conducts analog and digital circuit design and simulation.
  • Performs hands-on experimental work on prototype components, circuits, and assemblies.
  • Captures designs using eCAD tools.
  • Plans and executes the qualification testing for new products.
  • Transfers design to factory, creates detailed production test plans and provides follow-on support.
  • Consistently ensures that business is always conducted with integrity and that behavior aligns with SubCom policies, procedures, and core values.



Qualifications




Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Engineering/Physics or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience required.
  • Strong experimental and laboratory skills.
  • Experience working with single mode optical fiber, fiber optic components and optical measurement techniques.
  • Skilled in developing automated test procedures (i.e. GUIs) for laboratory testing using LabWindows CVI.
  • Skilled in OrCAD schematic capture tool.
  • Skilled in computer-based data analysis tools.
  • Skilled in circuit simulation tools like LTSpice
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • A self-starter with the demonstrated ability to take initiative, who can proactively identify issues/opportunities and recommend actions.
  • Strong results orientation with a proven track record of flawless execution and strong attention to detail.
