Based in Flagstaff, AZ., the Restoration Field Forester provides technical support, field-based information capture, and safety management related to innovative forest restoration projects. This position works both internally and with a variety of external partners to lead and support efforts to modernize and innovate various practices involved in ecological forest restoration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties are anticipated in the percentages below, and may fluctuate based on the business needs:

Approx 65%:
* Assist with planning, implementing, and monitoring forest restoration projects in cooperation with a variety of partners (e.g. United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, private sector, contractors and stakeholders).
* Activities will include field data collection, testing, monitoring, refining, and implementing methods to streamline processes and interpretation that allow for informed decision making and direct action related to the restoration of forests.
* Expected to spend a majority of their time in the field, and have frequent interactions with partners, stakeholder, and contractors.

Approx 20%:
* Utilizes digital methods for data collection and management.
* Develops documentation of data collection protocols in cooperation with internal staff and partners which allows for ease of information transfer.

Approx. 15%:
* Training, monitoring and reporting of field safety protocols related to data collection and forest operation for both internal and contractor personnel.
* Timely and accurate completion of required documents such as performance check-ins; timecards; expense reports.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

* Position will execute all duties within the Conservancy's Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, business practices, processes and guidelines and Business Unit (BU) practices.
* Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
* Designs, documents, and implements field-based data collection methods.
* Provides guidance and trainings to both external cooperators and internal staff related to field-based forest restoration activities.
* Supports Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collection and management.
* Monitors field safety protocol compliance and reporting.
* Trains TNC staff, external contractors, and partners on safety protocols.
* Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
* Acts independently within broad program goals.
* Work is diverse and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
* May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
* Regularly travels in and around the Flagstaff, AZ area; may be required throughout Arizona as well as occasional travel within U.S for meetings, trainings, retreats, etc. (some may be overnight).
* Occasionally requires working long hours, weekends, and holidays.
* Able to lift, pull, push, move up to 25 lbs. on a regular basis.
* Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
* Other duties as assigned.



WHAT YOU'LL BRING

* Bachelor's degree and 3 years' experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Experience:
o Managing staff or volunteers, if applicable.
o Relationship building -- working closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, government officials, internal scientists.
o Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
o Communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
o Working with computers and related software, such as Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel and Word), "Box", web browsers and internet research.
o Training others.
* Youth qualified (completion of internal training within initial 30 days of employment; annually thereafter).


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 3-5 years' experience in natural resource management, similar field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software highly desired.
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
  • Experience with prescribed burning and/or wildland fire suppression.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Experience working in a metrics driven culture.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $48,600 - 56,880 for annual base salary ($22.58-$23.56/hour). This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, experience and internal equity. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
