Position Title: Right Start for Infant Mental Health Extern


Location: Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-Being; 3401 Eudora St., Denver, CO 80207


Brief Program Description: The Right Start for Infant Mental Health team is an outpatient program for pregnant individuals and families with a child aged birth to five years. The team works exclusively with peripartum individuals, infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. Many families are involved with child welfare due to documented histories of child abuse and neglect and involvement with the foster care system. We complete an initial evaluation process utilizing assessment measures such as the Working Model of the Child Interview and the Crowell Play Procedure to better understand various aspects of the caregiver/child relationship and identify areas for clinical intervention. We offer comprehensive, trauma-informed, attachment-focused interventions, and utilize several evidence-based practices including Child Parent Psychotherapy, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Circle of Security, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy. The Right Start team is located at the Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-being in North Park Hill, a unique and innovative space developed to support multi-generational families in the community and featuring a 40,000 ft urban garden and aquaponics greenhouse, a dental clinic, a preschool, and a day treatment program.


Title and Hours required:


-Infant Mental Health Extern

-15-20 hours a week along with a 9-12 month commitment. The placement follows the academic year and begins in the fall (August or September). Full day Mondays required

-Applications are accepted beginning in January for the upcoming year's placement with interviews occurring on a rolling basis until position is filled


Minimum Qualifications and # of openings:


2nd Year Master's or Doctoral Students in Psychology, Social Work, Family Therapy, or other related human services field with an emphasis on clinical work

Student Supervisor's Credential Level: Licensed Psychologist, LCSW, or LPC depending on availability


Duties of Placement and Miscellaneous Information:


Following an initial period of training and shadowing opportunities, the student position will ultimately participate in all core clinical services offered through the Right Start for Infant Mental Health team. These duties will be tailored to the developmental level and training interests of particular extern, but will include managing a caseload of 5-8 consumers and possible co-facilitation of groups if interested. The student will be supervised by both a licensed staff clinician and the predoctoral psychology intern. The student will receive 1 hour of individual supervision with each supervisor, 1 hour small group supervision with the program manager, and 2 hours team meeting/group supervision with the entire team. On site for full day Mondays is required. Bilingual Spanish encouraged.
