The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is currently seeking a full time Ophthalmic Technician 2 to work in Miami. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
Provides patient-centric care.
Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
Meets daily productivity goals.
Maintains JCAHPO certifications.
Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
Works evenings and weekends as needed.
Performs organizational duties as assigned.
Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams. Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives.
Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members.
Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.
Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.
Reason for visit • Tangent screen visual fields
Chief complaint • Basic ocular motility
History of present illness • Pupillary evaluation
Basic review of systems • Ocular surface assessment
Review systemic and ocular medications • Eye drop administration
Record allergies • Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care
Pharmacy information • Pachymetry
Family, social, medical, and ocular history • Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
Visual acuity at distance and near • Color vision test

QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
2 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skill, and Attitudes: • Works well with patients of all age groups. • Presents with a professional appearance. • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills. • Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment. • Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail. • Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge. • Works independently and in a collaborative environment. • Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility. • Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform. • Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups. • Prepares patients for intravitreal injections. • Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe. • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
