The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

Pachymetry
Family, social, medical, and ocular history
Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
Visual acuity at distance and near
Color vision test
Lensometry
Stereopsis test
Manual refraction
Sensorimotor exam
Confrontational fields
Automated & manual perimetry
Humphrey visual fields
Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields
Amsler Grid visual fields
Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
Provides patient-centric care.
Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
Meets daily productivity goals.
Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
Works evenings and weekends as needed.
Performs organizational duties as assigned.
Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
Facilitates motility exams.
Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
1 year of relevant experience

Additional Department Specific Duties
Under the direction of a physician, transcribe, in real time, a physician-patient encounter including, but not limited to, the patient's medical history, physician's impression, patient care plan, results of tests, prescriptions, and orders. Document any procedures performed by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.
Supports clinical activities with assigned providers and services in effort to ensure the successful coordination of care for patients throughout their visit.
Documentation in patient charts as required and directed by providers for patient care coordination.
Assists with procedure preparation, retrieval of supplies, loads imaging, patient education, and authorization documentation.
Assists with clinical activities, resolves delays, and guides patients through each step of their appointment enhancing the patient experience.
Provides in-clinic support to providers which can include documenting patient histories/medications/allergies and performing technician exams.
Facilitates virtual care visits by ensuring virtual exam equipment is prepared and patients and providers are able to connect.
Completes visual acuity, refractions, visual fields, and vision tests as needed.
Performs IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients and facilitates motility exams.
Performs imaging studies as needed including but not limited to OCTs, fundus photos, visual fields, and external photos.
Facilitates the uploading of patient images to the medical record including MRIs, CTs, and ophthalmic photos.
Reviews provider schedules in advance to ensure patients are scheduled appropriately and all pre-appointment requirements have been completed such as referrals, insurance authorizations for medication and procedures, test orders, etc.
Manages internal/external referrals and arranges appointments with medical specialists across the Health System and with community providers to facilitate patient care.
Assists with clinic research to facilitate care for study patients.
Develops cooperative relationships with patients and families by projecting a positive image and creating a professional atmosphere.
Maintains patient confidentiality as well as the confidentiality of hospital business information.
Oversees the maintenance and ordering of established supply levels in unit and supply rooms.
