Role Definition:

The Manufacturing Quality and Metrology Engineer provides the technical expertise necessary to design all aspects of production, costs, quality, compliance with safety guidelines, and environmental requirements for manufacturing. This role encompasses various responsibilities, including project coordination and management, quality assurance, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

What You Will Do:
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams on New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Capital Introduction (NCI) projects, ensuring adherence to project management quality deliverables. This includes updating and monitoring project plans, identifying and mitigating risks through PFMEAs, and efficiently collaborating with team members to resolve challenges.
  • Establish and maintain quality control processes to ensure product specifications are met and drive continuous improvement initiatives using 6-Sigma or Lean methodologies (Built in Quality). You will also lead DMAIC/DMEDI projects to enhance process efficiency and effectiveness, reviewing KPIs to evaluate quality initiatives.
  • Maintain and improve conformance to Caterpillar's Quality Management System (CQMS) and ISO 9001:2015 standard through regular process audits, documentation, and process enhancements. Additionally, ensure compliance with other industry standards and customer requirements by following APQP guidelines and utilizing NCI/NPI Gateway checklists.
  • Conduct Measurement System Analysis (MSA) to evaluate measurement system accuracy and precision, ensuring tools and gauges meet required standards. Develop and implement calibration procedures for measurement instruments, maintaining their reliability and accuracy.
  • Collect and analyze measurement data to identify trends and potential quality issues, using statistical tools to drive informed decision-making. You will be required to help maintain detailed records of measurement activities, calibration results, and quality assurance processes (e.g. SPC), preparing comprehensive reports for stakeholders.
  • Investigate measurement discrepancies and product quality issues, employing methodologies such as 8D for effective root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Provide training to team members on measurement techniques, quality standards, and problem-solving principles, fostering a culture of quality awareness and excellence.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and engineering teams to ensure quality requirements are integrated throughout the product lifecycle. Act as a subject matter expert, building strong relationships with stakeholders to facilitate effective quality communication and integration of best practices.
  • Coordinate the APQP-based Quality Plan for new products, ensuring compliance with customer KPIs and validating production readiness. Stay updated on advancements in metrology technologies and methodologies, evaluating their applicability to enhance measurement capabilities and overall product quality.
What You Will Have:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Extensive Experience in evaluating past decisions, analyzing relevant data, and utilizing effective decision-making approaches.
Lean Manufacturing: Knowledge of the philosophy, principles, and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.
  • Working Knowledge of tools, techniques, and measurements associated with lean assessments.
Quality Control: Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and acceptance sampling techniques; ability to use statistical methods for process capability and control.
  • Experience with control charts, process capability analysis, and quality improvement methodologies.
Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies, and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage, and monitor the entire manufacturing process.
  • Extensive Experience in selecting and optimizing specific methodologies for specific products.
Measurement and Test Methods: Knowledge of measurement systems analysis (MSA) and calibration procedures; ability to ensure measurement instruments and gauges meet required standards.
  • Extensive Experience in collecting and analyzing measurement data to identify trends and potential quality issues.
Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment, and site.
  • Extensive Experience in safety inspections and promoting workplace safety protocols.
Problem Resolution in Manufacturing: Knowledge of manufacturing problem management processes, methodologies, and techniques; ability to use a disciplined approach to resolve standard and atypical problems.
  • Extensive Experience in trending data and root cause analysis to identify and address recurring problems.
Top Candidates May Also Have:
  • Manufacturing and assembly experience.
  • Manufacturing Engineer experience.
  • Strong data analytics with experience in Excel, PowerBI, Minitab.
  • ASQ Certification for Quality Engineering or equivalent.

Summary Pay Range:
$95,640.00 - $143,520.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
