Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Technician Supervisor to join our team. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor serves as a member of the pharmacy management team. Under general supervision from the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, coordinates and supervises the personnel and technical services in UIHC Acute Care Pharmacies. This position is responsible for the supervision of pharmacy personnel during the second shift and will allow for flexibility in hours with the right candidate, ideally looking for coverage 1:00 pm - 9:30 pm, will consider four 10 hour shifts or five 8 hour shifts.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Assists with training and orientation of staff:
    • Assist with preparing training and orientation materials for staff
    • Assist with training and orientation of staff
    • Assist with evaluation of training of staff
    • Provide feedback regarding the evaluation of skill level of staff assigned to a given day on the schedule
    • Maintains competency and performs all duties and responsibilities of Pharmacy Technician
  • Assists with coordination of resources related to drug shortages:
    • Communicate to staff necessary information regarding drug shortages
    • Coordinate supply chain
    • Facilitate implementation of new compounding procedures
    • Develop new forms and distribute information to staff
  • Optimize automated dispense cabinet inventory for medications in short supply.
  • Assists with preparation and monitoring of aseptic technique and competencies.
  • Supervise the performance of the technical aspects of drug preparation and dispensing and ascertain that proper established procedures are followed.
  • Responsible for personnel actions for technicians and other designated employees, to include:
    • interviewing and recommending hiring of new employees
    • participation in employee orientation, training programs, and in-service education programs
    • employee supervision, evaluation, counseling, and disciplinary action
    • scheduling and work assignments
    • familiarization and compliance with University, State and Federal safety codes and regulations
    • Conducting technician meetings
  • Responsible for evaluation of the quality and quantity of services provided by pharmacy to UIHC according to established procedures and standards.
  • Perform administrative activities as assigned including the preparation of procedures, analyses, workload data, and budget reports.
  • Participate in management meetings and decisions relating to new services or procedures, employee relations, and control.
  • Provide estimates of resources necessary to initiate services including staffing, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitor operation of the clean room, automated compounding equipment refrigerators and incubators.
  • Perform adjustments or initiate request for repairs or replacement as needed.
  • Initiate and prepare forms and records including payroll records, inventory records, and requisitions.
  • Attend (and communicate via in-service education) seminars, conferences and institutes designed to increase personal knowledge of communication techniques, employee relations, and management.
  • Responsible for assuring technicians maintain adequate supplies of medications, bags and other supplies from Stores, automatic replacement and the pharmacy storeroom. Responsible for assuring that all medications are properly stored.
  • Responsible for assisting pharmacy managers in understanding and implementation of current USP 797/795/800 and Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners rules and regulations related to the production of sterile products.
  • Able to perform all duties performed by the pharmacy technicians as needed.
  • Demonstrate and encourage staff to achieve UIHC goals and objectives as expressed by the UIHC Strategic Plan and Service Leadership program.
  • Ensure that staff understand their role in patient medication safety and actively search for methods to improve medication safety aspects of workflow.
  • Oversee the orientation, training and education of externship students in the area of sterile product preparation.
  • Staff as needed based on workload needs. Minimum weekend staffing will include 2 weekend shifts (day, evening, overnight) every 12 weeks.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Successful completion of the pharmacy technician certification exam within twelve months of the start of employment.

Experience Requirements:



  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in supervisory, pharmacy or technical work setting.

  • Job related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, creating positive working relationships with team members including healthcare providers, vendors and pharmacy staff.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Job-related experience in a hospital setting is desirable.
  • A Master of Science in healthcare/management related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA is desirable.
  • Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management and Epic electronic health record is highly desirable.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, keeping multiple initiatives moving forward simultaneously.
