Job Description Summary


Provides supervision of the daily husbandry in the animal facility including but not limited to the scheduling of work duties; supervision of work production and
providing the husbandry with daily direction. Utilizing the quality performance worksheets the facility supervisor will review and perform quality assessments of husbandry personnel work performance throughout the facility. Interfaces with husbandry and investigator personnel to troubleshoot problems, issues and customer service concerns of a routine nature. Provides backup to the Polaris and ACT/Trainer to provide orientation and training for existing and new users of the facility and cage card and animal requisition management in Polaris. Responsible for reporting of routine maintenance items to Penn Facilities and ensuring they are placed in the maintenance log and the log is kept up to date. May act as the functional manager in absence of the manager. Previous supervisory experience preferred.




Job Description





Job Responsibilities



  • Supervise the daily animal husbandry activities of personnel assigned to the facility, providing direction as needed. Consult with Manager for all disciplinary action regarding husbandry staff.

  • Oversee the activity of the animal care staff, including but not limited to scheduling of daily, weekend and holiday activities to ensure quality husbandry care and efficient use of manpower. May act as the functional Manager in the absence of the manager.

  • Interface with primary investigators and research staff to troubleshoot and resolve simple problems and perform customer service related to husbandry and animal care.

  • Provides back-up to the facility Polaris and ACT/trainer to provide orientation and training for existing and new users of the facility and cage card and animal requisition management in Polaris.

  • Assist in the ordering of feed, bedding and supplies in support of animal facility.

  • Reports routine maintenance repairs to Penn Facilities and follows up to ensure completion. Ensures that all repairs have been entered into the maintenance log and the log is up to date.

  • Oversees the receipt and inspection of animal shipments to be housed in the facility. Perform husbandry duties when short staffed.





This position is classified as "Essential Personnel." As an essential employee, you may be expected to report to work or remain on duty during university closures, delayed openings, or early dismissals, unless otherwise directed by your supervisor or a member of the senior management team. Additionally, you may also be required to work during university emergencies, including but not limited to natural disasters, extended periods of inclement weather, and other unforeseen events.



Qualifications




  • A High School Diploma or GED is required and 5 to 7 years in the laboratory animal field or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Must become AALAS certified within one year of acceptance of the job. Must have knowledge of proper restraint, handling and euthanasia techniques.

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English. Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions. Ability to explain problems/issues/solutions. Must be service oriented and able to work as a team member. Able to repetitively lift 50 lbs. Ability to stand for long periods. Must pass pre-employment physical examination before starting work. Ability to work weekends/holidays/overtime as required. May be required to pass FBI background check. Computer skills a plus.
