Job Role Summary
Reporting to the President/CEO, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations, including functional responsibility of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Controller will ensure that Fathers and Families Center has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct audits. In addition, s/he will partner with the Director of Administration to manage and enhance IT functions for the agency.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
Coordinates all audit activity
Consistently analyzes financial data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitors progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the agency's financial status
Assists CEO and Director of Administrationin the annual budgeting and planning process; administers and reviews all financial plans and compares to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
Supports the CEO and Director of Administrationin engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
Oversees financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensures that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collates financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants;
Manages and tracks the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
Manages and maintains facility contracts
Job Requirements
Minimum of a BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred. Minimum 10 years accounting experience in nonprofit environment preferred.
Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential
Experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Skills in data/statistical assessment/analysis methods; research and problem-solving techniques; effective interpersonal communication; management, organization, supervisory skills
Working knowledge of accounting concepts/principles ranging from financial statements to reconciling/balancing methods
Ability to manage multiple demands
Advanced working knowledge of MS Windows, Excel, and Word and ability to design electronic spreadsheets
In-depth knowledge of computerized financial systems and its applications to Corporate accounting
Ability to compile and analyze statistical/financial information to determine user needs, reorganize/combine raw financial, statistical data into income statements, balance sheets, etc.
Ability to work effectively, with accuracy, under pressure of constant deadlines
