JOB SUMMARY:

Assist with research in a lab, including lab management, animal care, and contributing to ongoing research projects. Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

45% - Essential - Conduct research activities related to ongoing projects, including: craniofacial genetics, development, and evolution. Ongoing projects supported by NIH and NSF grants include analysis of functional and morphological impact of sexual dimorphism and transcriptional control of facial development. Responsible for independent execution, troubleshooting, and analysis of experiments, responsible for retaining a detailed laboratory notebook, and in providing materials for manuscripts. Independently conducts techniques like embryonic manipulations, microscopic analysis, nucleic acid manipulation, analysis of microCT scans, and shape analyses.

30% - Essential - Animal Care: Assist with zebrafish and cichlid fish facilities, including daily feeding and ensuring animal inventory is up-to-date. Independently maintain animal husbandry and related nucleic acid isolation and genotyping of animals.

10% - Essential - Lab Management: Assist other technicians with lab maintenance such as ensuring lab and safety records. Help monitor inventory and prepare chemical solutions, media and standard buffers, sterile supplies, eletrophoresis gels, and all other pre-made supplies for the lab. Request and manage ordering and chemical inventory.

10% - Essential - Assist in coordination of undergraduate researchers, including in technical assistance. Assist in management of daily lab duties such as implementing and enforcing proper safety and waste disposal procedures.

5% - Essential - Communicate research findings: Optimize and write up lab protocols, present experiments and research findings at lab meetings and conferences, prepare data for manuscripts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School or Equivalent and work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, in a health care setting or in a general maintenance or machine shop environment. A bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline may be substituted for the required work experience.

This position includes work in a humid, warm zebrafish facility, may include work in cold rooms, use of mechanical equipment, and exposure to laboratory chemicals and biological materials.
