Summary:

The MetOcean, Science & Technology Division of RPS, a Tetra Tech Company, has an opening for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Marine Instrumentation Specialist in Charleston, SC. We are seeking a self-starting individual with a positive attitude who can support our projects related to oceanographic instrumentation integrations for various clients in the US and abroad and also support to the US Army Corps of Engineers Dredge Quality Management (DQM) program. The optimal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience in marine instrumentation; electrical, networking, and mechanical design, and have a working knowledge of dredging, bathymetric surveying and/or marine construction

Your Role:

Serve as a lead instrumentation specialist with the following responsibilities:


  • Maintain and operate a wide array of oceanographic instrumentation including ADCPs, CTDs, met stations, water level sensors and oceanographic buoys.
  • Design, assemble and operate integrated oceanographic measurement systems including data loggers and data transmission systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair oceanographic data collection systems in the field and remotely.
  • Provide support to the DQM program.

Qualifications :

Educational and Eligibility requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree + a minimum of 2 years of related experience or technical degree + a minimum of 4 years of related experience
  • Four years of experience oceanographic instrumentation and the integration of instrumentation with data loggers and telemetry systems
  • Experience working in marine construction, survey or dredging.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.
  • Have a valid drivers' license with acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Eligibility for a passport and TWIC card.
  • English fluency and report writing.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Required Capabilities

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be able to adjust readily to change, make decisions independently.
  • Experience in the integration of oceanographic sensors with data loggers and data telemetry systems
  • Experience in the installation and operation of oceanographic instrumentation including ADCPs, water quality sensors, wave sensors and meteorological sensor packages.
  • Experience in electronical systems including serial data communication and networking.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office applications, Excel and Word.
  • Experience with low voltage DC systems.
  • Experience with solar charging systems.
  • Be computer literate with basic IT and networking skills.
  • Experience with data telemetry systems including cellular, radio and satellite.
  • Must be comfortable working on vessels at sea.

Desirable Skills

  • Strong communication skills and experience in client interactions
  • Familiarity with scientific and/or environmental data
  • Time series data QA/QC and processing
  • Computer programming in Matlab, Python, VB
  • Experience with and a working knowledge of:

o GIS in ESRI's Arc Desktop

o Hypack Navigation Software

o CAD
