Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Provides oversight for first year student programs including, Welcome Week, Hoosier Experience and a first-year student mentoring program.

  • Responsible for supporting initiatives in the IUB 2030 strategic plan around creating a seamless transition for first year students to IUB.

  • Responsible for creating and sustaining long-lasting relationships with parents and families that enhance and strengthen the student experience beyond the classroom.

  • Partners with parents and families to help enhance student success, provides opportunities for parents to engage with IU, and serves as a trusted resource providing a link between Indiana University and parents and families seeking information and assistance.

  • Oversees programming to support family connection and engagement including Family Weekend, a monthly e-newsletter, and a webinar series.

  • Supports the Dean of Students Office with crisis response including serving on the on-call response team and will respond to student, parent, and faculty requests for assistance from the Dean of Students¿ Office.

  • Advises the Associate Vice Provost for Student Life and Dean of Students on key student life issues.

  • Serves on the senior leadership team for the Care and Advocacy area and is a member of the Leadership Team for the Office of Student Life.

  • Participates in planning, leadership, and advancement for the Care and Advocacy area within the Office of Student Life.

  • Provides vision, leadership, and program development for the newly formed First Year and Family Experience Programs area.

  • Provides supervision and oversight for a team of 5 including the Senior Associate Director of First Year Experiences and Assistant Director for Parent and Family Programs.

  • Provides vision and leadership in developing a comprehensive unit that focuses on programming initiatives to support first year students transition to Indiana University and ongoing initiatives to support parents and family members as partners in student success.
    Develops, leads, and executes initiatives and day-to-day operations in representing first year student and parent and family interests.

  • Partners with other units on campus including academic partners to coordinate orientation and special events for parents and families such as Welcome Week, Hoosier Experience and Family Weekend.

  • Leads the development, coordination and implementation of ongoing parent and family outreach and support programming of a comprehensive parent and family and first year student communication plan.

  • Facilitates content development of monthly first year student and parent and family e-newsletters.

  • Leads assessment efforts for the First Year Experience and Family Programs area.

  • Oversees support for the Parents Advisory Board.

  • Assists in fundraising efforts related to Parent and Family Programs, in collaboration with the Office of Student Life Development team and the IU Foundation.

  • Collaborates with the VPSL and AVP in responding to student and parent concerns.

  • Provides supervision, staff development, training, and evaluation for 4 full time staff and 1 graduate assistant including 2 direct reports.

  • Serves on the Senior Leadership Team for Student Care and Advocacy, serve in the On Call Response Team and Expressive Activity Support Team, and assist in crisis management response. Serves as the Office of Student Life Liaison to the Office of Enrollment Management and New Student Orientation Programs.

  • Represents the Office of Student Life and work with appropriate university committees and task forces. Work with the Council for Student Affairs, which includes academic liaisons from each academic unit.

  • Other duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities


  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define student support methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority student support projects/initiatives.

  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase student support initiatives.

  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.

  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of student support resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale student support projects with a wide audience in support of academic initiatives.

  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.

  • Researches and stays up to date on new industry student support standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.

  • Works collaboratively with other student support leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.

  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to student support.

EDUCATION



Required



  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field


Preferred



  • Terminal degree preferred in higher education, counseling, or other related fields

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 8 years in student support, higher education student affairs, or related field

  • 1 year of management experience in relevant field

  • Demonstrated experience in program development.

  • Demonstrated experience in full-time staff supervision.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills


Preferred



  • Familiarity with university database systems (SIS, Maxient)

Working Conditions / Demands



This position requires the ability to work on multiple priorities during a single day, prioritize many activities, communicate with a wide range of constituents, and write effectively and professionally. Mental concentration is intense and required.


This role requires the ability to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary



$ 105,000 - $110,000 annually, based on education and experience.



Work Hours



Potential for work hours outside of 8am to 5pm and on weekends.
