Job Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing Informatics is seeking a 90% Nursing Practice Leader to assist with various nursing initiatives and processes within the Children's and Women's Service, CLABSI Prevention & Pediatric Vascular Access.



Position Specific Summary:


The Nursing Practice Leader for Children's and Women's Services CLABSI Prevention and Pediatric Vascular Access functions as an expert clinical leader and change agent for the CWS patient population by incorporating the roles of clinical specialist, educator, consultant, clinician, leader of evidence-based practice and quality, and role model of professional nursing practice and interdisciplinary team work to advance patient care outcomes and nursing practice. The NPL provides leadership and functional supervision for CLABSI and vascular access nursing and patient care services.


Key Areas of Responsibility


• Lead nursing practice and patient care at the meso/macro level (i.e. service line, division, or departmental level)

• Lead the evaluation and implementation of clinical technologies that support patient care

• Provide expert specialty-level education to healthcare staff, patients, students or residents. Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences

• Utilize expert knowledge and skill of compliance standards. Lead development and implementation of procedures and share responsibility for Quality Improvement (QI) plan with appropriate nursing leaders

• Knowledge of the medical, social, economic and other services provided by other departments or facilities and the ability to integrate these multidisciplinary treatments for optimal patient care

• Knowledge of training and development processes, tools and techniques to develop clinical skills of students, residents, and staff

• Knowledge of the factors contributing to quality patient care, treatment and education; the ability to influence these factors in a positive way

• Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards, policies and procedures relevant to function and organization

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's or Doctorate Degree in Nursing or related field is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience pediatric and/or neonatal nursing
  • Previous experience collaborating with and leading individuals and teams to improve patient care outcomes including leading change and implementation of new programs across interprofessional teams
  • Demonstrated skill in leading change, developing, and implementing new programs, presenting education programs, teaching, and mentoring nursing staff
  • Experience with leading quality and evidence-based practice initiatives
  • Experience with regulatory environment with various federal and state agencies and the Joint Commission
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, families, outside agencies/vendors, and the community
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications
  • Experience modeling service excellence principles/standards
  • Willingness to obtain Vascular Access Certification within one year

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body
  • Experience working in large academic medical center.
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • Previous experience developing and/or implementing evidence-based standards of care
  • Experience with pediatric code and rapid response teams
  • Member/involvement in professional organization
